Job description

The main function of a convenience store associate is to wait on customers. This may involve serving food, ringing up purchases or answering any questions customers may have. As such, the associate should be courteous and friendly.

When not serving customers, the associate may perform a variety of duties. The associate may perform general cleaning duties around the store or refill food and drink appliances such as coffee makers. The associate may also perform stocking and merchandising duties such as filling shelves, building displays or putting up signs. Associates perform security functions such as watching for possible shoplifting or reporting drivers who pump gas and leave will out paying.

In addition to customer service skills, convenience store associates need to possess basic math skills to transact customer purchases and perform functions such as inventory of stock. They must be able to learn to operate equipment such as cash registers, lottery ticket machines. 9as pump consoles and food service appliances. The job can also be physically demanding, as associates may be required to stand up for long periods of time or lift heavy items.
