Position Summary: 

ECM Consultants is seeking a Civil Engineer Intern to perform a full range of engineering functions, including analysis, troubleshooting, existing-condition assessments, planning, engineering studies, scope-of-work development, cost estimating, design and construction document review, and project schedule review. In this role, you will prepare plans and specifications for construction, maintenance, and repair projects while supporting public health, safety, and welfare through strong quality assurance. 

Position Responsibilities: 

Project Coordination & Documentation 

  • Attend project meetings and prepare meeting minutes. 
  • Prepare plans and specifications in accordance with project scopes of work. 
  • Perform design calculations as needed. 
  • Maintain project documents and construction records. 
  • Coordinate with clients, subconsultants, utility companies, and other project stakeholders. 
  • Prepare complete bid packages. 
  • Create and edit reports for construction, maintenance, and repair projects. 
  • Organize and plan daily tasks to ensure efficient use of time and resources. 

Field Inspection & Construction Support 

  • Assist in preparing pre-inspection packages, including analysis, scope-of-work development, and cost estimates. 
  • Coordinate and perform field inspections to assess existing conditions. 
  • Review test data. 
  • Collect, organize, and maintain documents associated with assigned inspection activities, including adverse-weather records, time-and-material reports, and photo records. 
  • Submit required daily reports and written or oral presentations to the supervisor. 
  • Ensure that work performed and inspected meets the minimum requirements of applicable codes and ordinances. 
  • Manage projects with a varied range of tasks. 

Key Capabilities: 

  • Ability to apply engineering concepts in real-world environments.

  • Practical problem-solving skills in situations where limited standardization exists. 
  • Ability to read blueprints, specifications, and maps and maintain as-built records, punch-list items, and time-and-material reports.

  • Ability to learn LADOTD project software, SiteManager, and Materials. 
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Supervision: 

  • Works under the direction of the Project Engineer and/or Project Manager. 
  • May assist with the coordination and oversight of CAD drafting activities. 
  • May provide indirect support and coordination to field inspection personnel. 

Experience/Education/Licensing & Certification Requirements: 

Required 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited university. 
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of engineering experience. 
  • Engineer Intern license required. 

Preferred 

Professional Engineer license. 

Work Environment 

  • This position involves a combination of professional office and field work.
  • Field assignments may involve varying weather conditions, temperatures, elevated noise levels, and other non-standard environmental conditions depending on project requirements.
  • Employees are expected to follow all applicable safety requirements and maintain a professional, safety-conscious approach while working on project sites. 

Physical Requirements: 

Field work may require the ability to: 

  • Stand and walk for extended periods. 
  • Navigate uneven surfaces and active construction sites. 
  • Use hands and arms for reaching, handling, and operating equipment. 
  • Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crawl, and lift up to 50 pounds. 
  • Communicate effectively through speaking and hearing. 
  • Utilize close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision with the ability to adjust focus as needed. 

Special Project Notification 

  • This position is based in Shreveport, Louisiana, supporting the Jimmie Davis Bridge Design-Build Project. 
  • The Civil Engineer Intern will primarily support field inspections, engineering documentation, construction support, and project closeout activities while gaining practical experience in transportation infrastructure design and construction. 
  • The project currently has approximately 18 months remaining.
