What is a custom welder?

A Custom Welding job involves fabricating, modifying, or repairing metal structures based on specific client requirements. Welders in this role work with various metals, techniques, and blueprints to create unique or specialized products. They may handle one-off projects, repair broken parts, or manufacture custom components for industries like automotive, construction, or manufacturing. Attention to detail and precision are crucial for ensuring structural integrity and meeting design specifications.

What types of projects or industries do custom welders typically work on?

Custom welders often work on a wide range of projects, including fabrication of unique metal components, repair and modification of machinery, and construction of structural frameworks. Industries that commonly seek custom welding expertise include manufacturing, automotive, construction, shipbuilding, and the arts. You may be tasked with one-off jobs for local clients or contribute to larger, ongoing production projects alongside a team of fabricators and engineers. This variety keeps the work interesting and offers opportunities to build a diverse skill set. If you enjoy hands-on problem solving and creative metalwork, custom welding can be a rewarding career path.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a custom welder, and why are they important?

To thrive in Custom Welding, you need strong technical welding skills, a thorough understanding of metals and fabrication techniques, and typically some formal training or certification such as AWS (American Welding Society) qualifications. Experience with specialized welding equipment like MIG, TIG, and plasma cutters, as well as blueprint reading and CAD systems, is highly valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help set top custom welders apart. These competencies are critical for delivering precise, high-quality custom products that meet unique client specifications and industry standards.

How much do custom welders make?

Custom welders typically earn between $40,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and specialization. Skilled welders with certifications and advanced techniques can earn higher wages, especially in industrial or specialized settings.

Job description

Overview

We are seeking skilled Welder / Fabricators to join our dynamic manufacturing team. This is a direct-hire role from Day 1, offering full benefits, multiple shift options, and long-term job security right out of the gate.

In this role, you will fabricate high-end metal details, complex weldments, and architectural facade products. This is a custom manufacturing environment, not a repetitive assembly line-you will have the opportunity to build highly visible, high-impact work that you can be proud of.

This is a blueprint-heavy role where you will rely on engineering drawings to guide your work. Your primary focus will be on MIG welding-specifically working on flat parts, tubing, and structural assemblies-alongside general custom fabrication. While strong MIG and fabrication skills are the core of this job, any TIG welding experience you bring to the table is a fantastic bonus.

Compensation

  • $25 - $27 / hr
  • Shift differential on 2nd and weekend

Shift

  • 1st shift: 5am-4:30pm M-Th
  • 2nd shift: 5pm-4:30am M-Th
  • Weekend shift: 5am-5pm F-Sun

Benefits

  • Health, vision, dental
  • 401(k) + match
  • PTO

Responsibilities:

  • Execute Precision MIG Welding - Perform high-quality MIG welding, heavily focusing on flat parts, tubing, and structural components. You must be able to adapt to a variety of thicknesses and positions. (TIG welding experience is a strong plus!)
  • Fabricate Architectural Metals & Facades - Interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, bills of materials, and diagrams to accurately layout, fit, and fabricate complex structural weldments and facade components.
  • Ensure High-End Finish Quality - Because much of our work is visible (architectural), you must produce clean welds and utilize grinders/finish tools to meet strict aesthetic specifications.
  • Operate Fabrication Tools and Equipment - Utilize handheld tools (grinders, weld stud guns) and heavy machinery (forklifts, overhead cranes) to manipulate large metal components safely and efficiently.
  • Perform In-Process Quality Inspections - Use calipers, weld gauges, tape measures, and other precision tools to verify geometric accuracy; identify defects early and rework as needed to meet specifications.
  • Maintain Equipment and Work Area - Perform preventative maintenance on weld machines, create specific setups/fixtures for unique builds, and keep the workspace clean and safe.
  • Model Professional Shop Behavior - Work effectively in a team environment, respect all teammates, and demonstrate self-motivation and high attention to detail.

Requirements

Qualifications:

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 3-5 years of experience as a metal fabricator
  • Strong proficiency in MIG welding (specifically flat parts, tubing, and structural welding)
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and technical instructions
  • Physical ability to lift 30-50 lbs regularly and perform repetitive tasks/manual dexterity work
  • Ability to operate a forklift and overhead crane

Preferred Skills

  • TIG welding experience is highly preferred
  • Basic computer navigation and utilization skills
  • Experience in architectural metals, custom manufacturing, or job-shop environments
  • Certification in welding or fabrication technology

The Ideal Candidate

  • MIG & Fabrication Expert - You are highly capable with MIG welding on structural parts and tubing. If you also know how to TIG weld, even better!
  • Blueprint-Driven Builder - You can translate complex weld symbols and drawings into clean, accurate assemblies and catch dimensional issues before they become rework. You are highly comfortable doing blueprint-heavy work.
  • Architectural Eye - You understand that in facade work, the finish matters. You take pride in clean beads, precise fit-up, and top-tier fabrication.
  • Reliable Team Player - You bring energy to the floor, communicate clearly with management, and respect the safety and workflow of your fellow teammates.

Benefits

  • Health insurance
  • 401(k) matching
  • Paid time off
  • Vision insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Employee assistance program
  • Disability insurance
