A Custom Welding job involves fabricating, modifying, or repairing metal structures based on specific client requirements. Welders in this role work with various metals, techniques, and blueprints to create unique or specialized products. They may handle one-off projects, repair broken parts, or manufacture custom components for industries like automotive, construction, or manufacturing. Attention to detail and precision are crucial for ensuring structural integrity and meeting design specifications.

What types of projects or industries do custom welders typically work on?

Custom welders often work on a wide range of projects, including fabrication of unique metal components, repair and modification of machinery, and construction of structural frameworks. Industries that commonly seek custom welding expertise include manufacturing, automotive, construction, shipbuilding, and the arts. You may be tasked with one-off jobs for local clients or contribute to larger, ongoing production projects alongside a team of fabricators and engineers. This variety keeps the work interesting and offers opportunities to build a diverse skill set. Job Description

This role focuses on fabricating and welding custom industrial work platforms, mezzanines, ladder platforms, stairs, and steps for specialized projects, including those in aerospace and government-funded environments. You will use MIG and TIG welding processes on aluminum, steel, and stainless steel to build high-quality, custom structures based on detailed blueprints and drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Perform MIG and TIG welding on aluminum, steel, and stainless steel components for customized platforms, mezzanines, ladders, stairs, and steps.
  • Weld material in thicknesses ranging from 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch, ensuring strong, consistent, and visually acceptable welds.

  • Prepare materials by cleaning, cutting, burning, and fitting pieces prior to welding, using appropriate fabrication equipment and tools.
  • Set up, measure, and assemble components accurately, ensuring correct dimensions and alignment before and after welding.
  • Verify welding results by inspecting and testing welds, including checking bead size and other specified requirements.
  • Use tape measures, layout tools, and fabrication fixtures to ensure precise fitting and structural integrity of assemblies.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and welding symbols to plan and execute fabrication and welding tasks effectively.
  • Work efficiently in a production-oriented environment while maintaining high quality standards and safety practices.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of MIG welding experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of MIG welding experience specifically on aluminum.

  • Hands-on experience with TIG welding processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and detailed fabrication drawings for custom products.
  • Experience examining welds for bead size and compliance with specifications.
  • Skill in fabricating structures such as platforms, mezzanines, ladders, stairs, and steps.
  • Proficiency in using fabrication tools and equipment for cleaning, preparing, cutting, burning, and welding materials.
  • Strong blueprint reading and layout skills, including accurate measurement using a tape measure.
  • Capability to work 50–60 hours per week as required by production demands.

  • Familiarity with fitting and assembling structural components prior to welding.
  • Experience working with sheet metal and structural steel fabrication.
  • Comfort working in a non-climate-controlled shop environment.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality, structurally sound welds.

Why Work Here?

You will contribute to highly specialized, custom projects that support advanced industries such as aerospace and government-funded initiatives, offering a strong sense of purpose and craftsmanship in your work. The role provides consistent overtime opportunities, allowing you to significantly increase your earnings while developing your welding and fabrication skills on complex, one-of-a-kind structures. You will work in a hands-on, production-focused environment where your technical expertise and attention to detail are valued and directly reflected in the finished products.

Work Environment

This position is based in a non-climate-controlled manufacturing shop environment that focuses on custom fabrication and welding work. You will work with aluminum, steel, stainless steel, sheet metal, and structural components using MIG, TIG, and flux core welding processes, along with cutting, burning, and fabrication equipment. The schedule typically requires 50–60 hours per week, reflecting a production-oriented setting with regular overtime.
