ABOUT SEIU Local 73:
With over 32,000 members, SEIU Local 73 has a proud history of raising standards for workers and their families. The Local represents service, technical and professional workers primarily in the public sector in Illinois and Indiana. Our members are generally employed by state and local governments, school districts, and publicly funded social service agencies and universities.
Local 73 is committed to helping workers organize and build a powerful collective voice on the job to win fair wages, meaningful benefits, a sustainable retirement, dignity, and respect.
ROLE:
Local 73 is looking for a skilled negotiator with substantial union organizing experience to be our next Director of Collective Bargaining. The Director of Collective Bargaining will lead major negotiations and teach the next generation of bargainers at Local 73.
DUTIES:
  • Leads collective bargaining with major employers.
  • Coordinates contract campaigns and early and inclusive campaign planning.
  • Develops and trains bargaining teams.
  • Focuses on member leadership development through bargaining, including a development pathway for leaders to negotiate.
  • Creates and teaches curriculum for new bargainers in a classroom setting.
  • Establishes union wide bargaining goals and standards in conjunction with Local elected officers.
  • Guides new bargainers as 1st or 2nd chair to provide on-the-job training on smaller contracts.
  • Evaluates and provides feedback to new bargainers.
  • Provides periodic updates to Local leadership on the status of negotiations.
  • Uplifts racial justice in our negotiation strategies, leadership development, and union wide contract goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated experience running successful contract campaigns that engage a broad cross section of workers.
  • Personal commitment to the mission and goals of SEIU Local 73.
  • 2 years of experience supervising staff.
  • 4-year college degree or equivalent life experience.
  • 5 or more years of experience negotiating Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  • 5 or more years of union organizing experience.
  • Ability and willingness to work long and irregular hours including nights and weekends.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Solid math skills.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Able to stay calm under pressure.
  • Bi-lingual English/ Spanish a plus but not required.

The salary range for this position is $108,000 - $125,000 annually, and the job comes with substantial benefits, including a $7,200 annual combined car/phone allowance, paid holidays and vacations, fully paid health insurance benefits, and a defined-benefit pension plan fully paid by the employer.
