Job description

Are we the road to your future?

We are currently searching for an experienced Traffic Engineer/Project Manager to support our Gulf Region group located in Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, or Tuscaloosa, AL. Candidates must be willing to relocate to Alabama if out of state.


To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, 5 years of traffic engineer and/or transportation planning.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Perform routine aspects of assignments requiring knowledge and application of basic engineering principles
  • Projects may include traffic operations analysis, traffic signal design, traffic signal timing development, corridor planning studies, transportation safety studies, roadway master planning, long range transportation planning, and transportation modeling (micro and macro)
  • Work on temporary traffic control plan/traffic management plan (TMP) and signing, pavement marking plans
  • Work on traffic signal design plans for new intersections and signal modifications to facilitate multimodal accommodations
  • Assist in preparing conceptual intersection layouts, schematics, signal timings and engineering reports
  • Assist with and prepare roadway design plans
  • Attend project meetings with clients
  • Learn project budgets to meet financial metrics
  • Potential to learn and participate in business development activities
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Assist East Gulf Manager in development of junior engineering staff
  • Prepare engineering studies, documents, and reports

What you need to have:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Civil Engineering from ABET accredited engineering program
  • 5+ years of experience – Must be in traffic engineering and/or transportation planning with a history of progressive growth in project responsibilities
  • Alabama PE License required
  • PTOE, PTP, and/or RSP certifications are a plus
  • Competency with traffic engineering and transportation planning practices and procedures
  • Competency with Synchro, VISSIM, SIDRA, HCS, and Microstation
  • Familiarity with CUBE Voyager and TransCAD is a plus
  • Familiarity with OpenRoads Designer is desired but not required
  • Competency with MS Office products
  • Must be dependable with the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team to meet deadlines and provide high quality work
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
  • Valid driver’s license
  • A satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)
