Position Objective: The Scientist will provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases within the National Institutes of Health.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Study basic principles of plant and animal life, such as origin, relationship, development, anatomy, and function

  • Be responsible for the management of the Usdin Laboratory mouse colony. This work includes: maintaining stocks of essential mouse strainso coordinating the import of additional mice into the mouse colony and the export ofmice/mouse embryos/mouse sperm to other facilities as neededo ensuring the cryo-preservation and cryo-recovery of appropriate mouse lineso develop appropriate genotyping assays for new mouse lineso supervising the generation of new mouse lines both by CRISPR-mediated gene-editingof embryos and appropriate breeding strategies using pre-existing mutant miceo overseeing the generation of embryonic stem cell and embryonic fibroblasts derivedfrom these animalso design and prepare animal study protocols and standard operation procedures (SOPs) 1
  • Train new personnel in appropriate lab-approved SOPs including those in place for working with this animal colony 2
  • Maintain and coordinate scientific equipment and make recommendations where necessary for theacquisition of new equipment
  • Conduct research on the molecular mechanisms responsible for mutation and disease pathology in the Repeat Expansion Disorders, with a focus on the Fragile X-related disorder, Friedreich ataxia and GLC Deficiency.
  • Perform research using genetic mouse and cellular models.
  • Develop reagents, assays and methodology that contribute to the goal of moving all the projects in the laboratory forward.
  • Maintain records of the experiments performed and the data acquired; update and maintain laboratory notebooks and databases.
  • Perform scientific literature searches.
  • Prepare reports on the experimental design notes and progress of research programs, studies and trials.
  • Prepare experimental results, including images, blots, expression data, etc.
  • Coordinate multiple projects concurrently in progress.
  • Collaborate with other research staff to ensure continuity of progress.
  • Participate in the weekly inter-group lab meetings and present research update as appropriate
  • Produce presentation slides for meetings
  • Prepare manuscripts and submit research papers to peer-reviewed scientific journals

  • Serve as the primary point of contact between the lab and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
  • Coordinate protocol submissions, amendments, and renewals to the ACUC to ensure compliance with ethical and regulatory standards.
  • Serve as the NIDDK Coordinator for Electronic Notebook onboarding in compliance with the electronic records mandate
  • Assist new users in NIDDK in the use of Electronic notebooks
  • Work products and documents related to performing experiments to elucidate the mutational mechanism responsible for the Fragile X related disorders and other repeat expansion diseases using biochemical, biophysical and genetic approaches with different animal and cell model systems.
  • Work products and documents related to the generation, characterization and maintenance of essential cell lines including those generated by CRISPR-mediated gene editing
  • Work products and documents related to the maintenance of a mouse colony including appropriate cryopreservation and cryo-recovery of various mouse lines as warranted, the generation of novel mouse lines by conventional breeding and gene editing approaches in embryos and the maintenance of appropriate lines of animals as needed for ongoing experiments by other laboratory personnel
  • Work products and documents related to the maintenance of essential laboratory robotic equipment including that essential for the automation of DNA preparation and analysis workflow
  • Work products and documents related to organizing daily laboratory notebook on experiments; preparing biweekly updates on on-going experiments and tasks; prepare summary progress reports and future directions on projects as segments of the assigned project approach their conclusion
  • Work products and documents related to performing scientific literature searches; write and submit research papers to peer-reviewed scientific journals; contribute to collaborative projects with other laboratories and departments
  • Work products and documents related to giving informal group meetings, lab presentations; produce presentation slides and/or posters for meetings; participate and represent the lab at national and international scientific meetings
  • Meet with lab members to present updates

Basic Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Philosophy or in another scientific field.
  • Three (3) years of specialized experience plus a Master's degree is equivalent to a Ph.D.
  • Five (5) years of specialized experience plus a Bachelor's degree is equivalent to a Ph.D
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a science related field
  • Demonstrate expertise in the generation and analysis of mouse model, pluripotent stem cell culture and differentiation
  • Significant scientific training in the areas of mouse and human genetics, stem cell biology, flow cytometry, DNA and protein purification, the genetics of repeat expansion mutations and their analysis
  • Strong publication record required
  • Skilled in Graphpad Prism and MS Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff
  • Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
