What is credit risk data science?

Credit Risk Data Science is a specialized field that uses statistical analysis, machine learning, and data modeling techniques to assess and predict the likelihood that a borrower will default on a loan or credit obligation. Professionals in this field analyze large datasets from financial transactions, credit reports, and market trends to develop models that help financial institutions make informed lending decisions. Their work helps manage risk, set appropriate interest rates, and comply with regulatory standards. By leveraging advanced analytics, credit risk data scientists play a crucial role in minimizing losses and maximizing profitability for banks and lenders.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a credit risk data scientist?

To thrive as a Credit Risk Data Scientist, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistical modeling, and a solid background in finance, mathematics, or a related field, often supported by an advanced degree. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R, experience with machine learning frameworks, and knowledge of credit risk modeling tools such as SAS or SQL are typically required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with stakeholders. These abilities are crucial for building accurate risk models, informing strategic decisions, and ensuring regulatory compliance in financial institutions.

How does a credit risk data scientist typically collaborate with other teams within a financial institution?

Credit Risk Data Scientists often work closely with credit analysts, risk managers, and IT professionals to develop, validate, and implement models that assess borrower risk. They frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to translate complex analytical findings into actionable business insights. Collaboration with compliance and regulatory teams is also common to ensure that risk models meet current regulatory standards. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the role bridges technical model development and practical risk management decisions.

Voloridge Investment Management

Jupiter, FL

Full-time

Posted 20 days ago

Job description

Voloridge Investment Management was founded by David Vogel in 2009 and is based in Jupiter, FL. We incorporate advanced data science and mathematics into our systematic, market neutral investment strategies to exploit alpha opportunities we consider unique in financial markets. Our firm is comprised of award-winning predictive modelers, experienced data analysts, advanced technologists, and a group of dynamic business professionals.

The Compliance Technology Engineer will develop, maintain, integrate, and support software applications and technology services used by the Legal and Compliance department. Experienced legal, regulatory, privacy, security, and compliance professionals within the department will provide subject-matter direction. The successful candidate is not expected to arrive as a regulatory expert; the role is intended for a technically capable candidate who can learn regulated business processes and translate approved requirements into reliable technical solutions.

Summary of Job Functions

Compliance-Owned Technology

  • Support the Legal and Compliance department's growing self-sufficiency in prioritizing and delivering its own technology needs
  • Maintain applications the department owns, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuity/recovery planning
  • Help evaluate whether a need is best addressed through custom development, platform configuration, commercial software, or another engineering team

Software Application Development

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain internal applications and services for the Legal and Compliance department, including front-end, back-end, integration, and automation components
  • Build tools supporting compliance monitoring, regulatory reporting, case management, records management, and audit evidence collection.
  • Apply sound security, testing, and documentation practices, and participate in code and design reviews

Compliance Systems Administration

  • Configure, administer, and extend commercially licensed platforms used for compliance, legal, privacy, audit, records management, or risk management
  • Manage workflows, permissions, system access, and integrations, coordinating with vendors and internal stakeholders as needed
  • Identify opportunities to replace manual processes with reliable automation

Requirements Analysis and Solution Design

  • Work with attorneys, compliance, privacy, and security stakeholders to translate approved business and regulatory requirements into technical specifications and designs
  • Document current- and future-state processes and develop prototypes or proofs of concept to evaluate solutions
  • Distinguish technical implementation questions from legal, regulatory, or risk-acceptance questions, escalating the latter to the appropriate subject-matter expert

Data, Reporting, and Automation

  • Develop reports, dashboards, and data extracts using compliance and operational data, including SQL-based queries and transformations
  • Automate recurring data collection, reconciliation, reporting, and evidence-generation processes
  • Support data accuracy, traceability, and retention controls, and assist with audit, examination, and risk-assessment requests

Security, Privacy, and Development Controls

  • Apply secure-development and privacy-by-design principles, using only the data reasonably necessary for the intended purpose
  • Follow applicable source-control, testing, access-control, change-management, and incident-response requirements
  • Identify applications or changes involving sensitive personal information, health information, or material compliance processes and obtain appropriate review

Working Environment

  • Full-time, onsite position at company headquarters in Jupiter, Florida
  • Regular collaboration with Legal, Compliance, Information Technology, Information Security, Data, Software Engineering, Research, Trading, and other business teams
  • Some applications may support time-sensitive or critical compliance processes; the position may occasionally assist with urgent system issues outside normal business hours

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent demonstrated technical ability
  • Academic, internship, personal-project, open-source, or professional experience developing software applications or services
  • Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language, such as C#, Python, Java, JavaScript, or TypeScript
  • Foundational knowledge of relational databases and SQL
  • Familiarity with application programming interfaces, web services, JSON, authentication concepts, and system integration
  • Experience using Git or another source-control system
  • Understanding of software-development fundamentals, including requirements analysis, debugging, testing, documentation, and maintainable code design
  • Ability to analyze a business process and translate it into structured technical requirements
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with technical and nontechnical professionals
  • Ability and willingness to learn financial-services, healthcare, privacy, cybersecurity, records-management, and other compliance concepts relevant to the company
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, document work carefully, and escalate unresolved issues appropriately

Preferred Skills and Previous Experience

  • Experience developing web applications, APIs, or background services
  • Familiarity with cloud application development and modern software-release practices (e.g., CI/CD, automated testing)
  • Experience configuring or extending enterprise workflow, document-management, case-management, GRC, audit, or regulatory-reporting platforms
  • Familiarity with identity and access management, application security, or data-governance concepts.
  • Experience developing dashboards, reports, or data pipelines
  • Coursework, internship experience, or demonstrated interest in financial services, healthcare, privacy, information security, risk management, or regulatory technology
  • Prior professional compliance experience is preferred, not required

Compensation and Benefits

  • Highly competitive base salary
  • Profit sharing bonus
  • Health, dental, vision, life, disability insurance
  • 401k
