What We Look For In a High School Writing Tutor
  • Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of argumentative essay construction, analytical writing, research paper methodology, narrative and creative writing, grammar and style refinement, and SAT/ACT writing preparation. Ability to explain thesis-driven essay structure, evidence integration, source citation, and revision processes while preparing students for AP courses, standardized tests, and college writing readiness.
  • Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching planning, drafting, and revising essays across argumentative, analytical, and narrative genres. Guides students through developing nuanced thesis statements, constructing body paragraphs with evidence and analysis, writing compelling introductions and conclusions, and editing for grammar, style, and voice. Emphasizes developing authentic voice and connects writing skills to college applications, scholarship essays, and professional communication.
  • Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with high school writing standards and common challenges such as developing analytical depth beyond summary, integrating textual evidence smoothly, and managing research paper scope. Adapts instruction using rubric-aligned feedback, mentor text analysis, and progressive writing assignments to support students from general English through AP levels building college-ready writing competencies.
  • Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
  • Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
  • Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
