About Spark

TELUS Spark Science Centre (Spark), a registered educational charity, exists to entertain and inspire people of all ages through creative encounters with science, engineering, technology, math and art. Spark exists to lift people up with the power of curiosity through creative encounters with science! Calgary's science centre is a pioneer in science entertainment and programming, with roots dating back  to 1967. Home to one of Western Canada's largest dome theatre, the Digital Immersion Gallery, VR experiences, and innovative spaces like Steven's Lab, where interactive experiments unfold before your eyes. From the robot-dog Flint to Canada's first robot-coa5ter, R05iE, and a 15-acre park surrounding the science of the developing brain, Spark is a hub for creative encounters.

Position Overview

Spark is currently recruiting a full-time two (2) month contract Indigenous/Land Science Helper. The helper will report directly to  the Manager, Indigenous Science. The Helper, Indigenous/Land Science would work directly with the Indigenous Science Team to help organize, coordinate, and implement the upcoming Indigenous Science Night (October 16, 2026). This is a multi-day event based on Indigenous Star Science, welcoming Knowledge Keepers and Indigenous Scientists from across Turtle Island. The events (many of which are not open to the public) include 

sacred site visits, ceremony, knowledge sharing and relational research, Elders circles, community gratitude event, all of which culminate in a large public facing event. You should love and have experience working with Elders and community of all ages, are comfortable in  large group settings, and excited to meet and welcome Indigenous communities to the gathering and this land. You should have a passion for community engagement, event organizing, are creative, and good at problem solving and communication. Knowledge of Indigenous or Land Science is not required, an openness to learn is. You thrive in a collaborative and inclusive work environment where science is for everyone, with diverse colleagues are united under the purpose of lifting people up with the power of curiosity. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support organizing and creating exhibits, experiences, and gatherings for the October events. 
  • Inclusive of working with community/presenters to help implement their presentation ideas (eg. Powerpoint development, exhibit builds, printing, decorating, etc..)
  • Help coordinate with other teams for the events, such as ordering event or marketing materials, set up, picking up or ordering supplies etc. This also includes working alongside community and Elders to reflect their needs and intentions for the event (inclusive of ceremony).
  • Support the Indigenous Science team in implementing the event with day of support with set up, communication across teams, Elder and community support with questions and general needs, protocol support with Elders and ceremony, take down, and post event reporting.
  • Ensure personal and team activities are aligned with Indigenous protocols and business and strategic goals of Spark as a whole.
  • Model high performance, flexibility and kindness in a rapidly changing growth environment.
  • Other duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications & Knowledge

  • A minimum 2 years' experience in event coordination and/or support
  • Experience working with Elders/Knowledge Keepers
  • A minimum 2 years' experience or expertise in (Indigenous) community engagement
  • A solid understanding of Indigenous Protocols
  •  Enthusiasm for Indigenous Knowledge and an Interest in Indigenous Science
  • Fluency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Canva, Powerpoint, and able to use most platforms. 
  • Personal vehicle and drivers licence an asset
  • Strong ethics and ability to manage confidential data if required
  • A proven track record of adding value to an organization's culture and initiatives
  • A positive attitude and open heart!
  •  Desire to work on a high performing team with a continuous upgrading culture to achieve high impact results. Fluidity and a desire to work hard and grow are essential
  • A high degree of creativity with the ability to lead with humility.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to change

Contract terms:

Type and Length: Full-time, two-month contract position (contract extension possible)

Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week, mostly Monday-Friday (some earlier morning and evening work required)
