Job description

Senior Creative Director

12+ years experience

Location: Austin, TX, New York City, or Los Angeles. (Hybrid)

About Material

Material connects consumer intelligence with customer demand generation to help ambitious businesses grow. We sit at the intersection of strategy, insights, design, and performance-which means the creative work here has real strategic grounding and real commercial stakes.

Our clients are category leaders across technology, services, finance, healthcare, and retail. They come to us because they want to grow smarter, not just louder.

The Challenge

Most B2B creative is forgettable. Complex categories get flattened into safe messaging. Interesting companies end up looking like everyone else.
We're looking for someone who sees things differently and knows what to do about it.

This is a senior creative leadership role at Material, a global insights-driven growth company. You'd lead creative for a category-leading B2B brand and help shape what commercial creativity looks like across our B2B and B2B2C practice. It's not a big-budget broadcast role. What there is: genuinely hard creative problems, audiences who know their industries cold, and work where clarity and conviction matter more than spectacle.

What You'll Do

Shape the Work

You'll lead creative for a flagship B2B account and play an active role in building Material's B2B creative practice. That means setting standards, developing frameworks, and helping define what insight-led commercial creativity looks like-not just executing to briefs, but influencing what the briefs become.

You'll translate strategy into creative systems: brand platforms, campaign architectures, content engines, and the connective tissue between them. You'll know when to push and when to protect, when to go broad and when to go precise. Together with the ECD, you'll set the creative operating model for B2B work across the practice.

Lead the Room

The best thing about this role isn't the title. It's that you'll be the person whose presence in a room changes what's possible-client presentations, planning sessions, proactive ideas, new business pitches. Your point of view earns trust from clients and makes your team want to bring you their best ideas.

Together with the ECD, you'll direct a senior creative team and mentor the careers inside it. You'll orchestrate workshares that showcase your team's work across the department and company. You'll represent creative in multidisciplinary team settings and take an active role in new business for brands that match your experience.

Your influence doesn't stop at your account team. Creatives across the department come to you for feedback, honest reads, and direction, because working with you makes their work better. You build those relationships deliberately.

Stay Close to the Craft

You have a copywriting background and you haven't wandered far from it. You can shape a platform, write a headline, and tell the difference between a brief that's ready and one that isn't. You don't step in to rescue work - you create the conditions that make rescue unnecessary.

You'll shape platforms for your teams to produce from, and step in to write in the right moments. You'll build and protect a client's voice with the same care you bring to the work itself.

Drive the Business

You understand that great creative serves commercial goals, and you can make that case fluently-connecting creative decisions to client growth, acquisition, and retention metrics. You scope engagements, protect margin, spot growth opportunities within existing accounts, and play an active role in new business conversations.

Who You Are

You walk into a room and the energy shifts. When you present work, clients lean in. When you give direction, your team uses it.

You're genuinely curious about business: how categories work, how buyers make decisions, what makes a brand matter to someone who has a job on the line. You read widely and connect dots others miss-across industries, culture, and technology. You bring clients ideas they didn't ask for.

You have strong taste and the confidence to defend it, but you're not precious. You know the difference between protecting a good idea and holding on too long. You think strategically, direct clearly, and edit precisely.

You've done enough B2B work to know it's harder than it looks-and you find that interesting rather than exhausting. You're enterprise-minded: your decisions serve the long-term health of the practice, not just the immediate engagement.

What You Bring

  • 12+ years of agency, studio, or brand experience, with the majority in a creative director role on B2B, B2B2C, and consumer brands

  • A portfolio showing conceptual thinking, versatility, and results-not just craft

  • Strong copywriting background, including campaigns you've directed and campaigns you've written yourself

  • Deep B2B channel fluency: trade media, performance marketing, social, CRM, search, AI search, video, and emerging channels

  • Experience developing client thought leadership, long-form content, and executive communications

  • Demonstrated ability to lead senior client relationships and grow accounts

  • Financial accountability: you've scoped engagements and managed to revenue and margin targets

  • Comfort with AI tools and genuine curiosity about how they reshape creative work and workflow

  • Software: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Figma, Gemini, ChatGPT, NotebookLM

Why Material

You'd be joining a global company with serious capabilities in strategy, insights, design, data, and technology. Creative at Material sits at the center of actual business problems - which means the work matters, and the people around you are smart enough to make it better.

Material operates with the kind of commercial clarity that makes creative decisions feel grounded rather than arbitrary. You'd have real strategic influence over how B2B creative develops here - not just for your accounts, but across the practice. Our clients span technology, services, retail, transportation, finance, and healthcare. We also create and launch new brands and products, putting innovation at the center of what we do.

Pay Range: $120,000.00 - 150,000.00
