What is a creative animal?

Creative Animals are professionals who use their imagination, innovation, and artistic skills to develop new ideas, concepts, and solutions in various industries. They often work in fields such as advertising, design, marketing, content creation, and the arts, contributing fresh perspectives and original work. Creative Animals thrive on thinking outside the box and are valued for their ability to solve problems with creativity and flair.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in creative animal care roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in creative animal care roles, such as animal enrichment coordinators or trainers, often encounter challenges like designing activities that are both safe and stimulating for a variety of species. Balancing animal welfare with creative enrichment requires a deep understanding of behavior and collaboration with veterinarians and animal keepers. Staying updated on new enrichment techniques and adapting to individual animal needs are also essential. Regular team meetings and continuous education help address these challenges, ensuring both animal well-being and professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Creative Director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Director, you need a strong background in visual design, branding, and concept development, often supported by a degree in design or a related field and a robust portfolio. Familiarity with design software like Adobe Creative Suite and project management tools is typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and creative problem-solving skills set outstanding Creative Directors apart. These abilities are vital for guiding teams, delivering innovative campaigns, and ensuring cohesive brand messaging.

Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what’s next.

Role Overview

The Manager of Animal Safety & Welfare will own the implementation, evolution, and operationalization of Netflix’s Animal Safety & Welfare Guidelines and related tools across productions, internal teams, and global regions.

This role will serve as the central point of authority between creative teams, production management, labor, legal, safety, comms, and external animal welfare organizations to enable informed and consistent decision making for the ethical, safe, and compliant use of animals in all Netflix productions.

This role blends policy development, cross-functional enablement, vendor ecosystem management, and production-facing consultation, with a strong emphasis on continuous improvement, documentation, and global scalability.

Key Responsibilities Program Ownership & Evolution
  • Maintain, optimize, and continuously improve the Netflix UCAN Animal Safety & Welfare Guidelines and associated tools, including:
    • Production documentation
    • Internal Airtable Intake Form
    • Animal Vendor List
    • N-Chat AI Assistant
    • Process flowcharts
  • Track feedback from internal teams and external productions to inform updates, refinements, and future iterations (e.g., “Global Animal Guidelines”).
  • Identify areas where additional clarity, new documentation, or expanded guidance is needed based on real-world use cases and scenarios.
  • Lead investigation and work in collaboration with cross functionals on internal and external communications
  • Lead the integration of animal use data into Slate Manager.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Change Implementation
  • Conduct roadshow-style presentations to internal teams (Production, Creative, Labor, Safety, Risk Management, Logistics etc.) to introduce the overall Animal Guidance, gather feedback, and drive adoption.
  • Facilitate deep-dive working sessions with internal stakeholders to integrate animal safety considerations into workflows across production types, formats, and verticals.
  • Identify required internal stakeholders for various animal-use scenarios (e.g., unscripted hunting, wildlife footage, specialty animal action, Netflix Live events) and design clear approval and escalation workflows.
  • Expand the Animal Vendor List by reviewing historical agreements and identifying recently used partners.
Production Advisory & Case Study Development
  • Consult with productions on intended animal action and provide guidance on best practices, alternatives, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Build and maintain a library of case studies demonstrating safe and effective approaches to animal-related action (e.g., green screen use, animatronics, puppetry, VFX alternatives, controlled live animal work).
  • Continuously document internal and external animal-related questions, challenges, and resolutions to build a robust institutional knowledge base.
  • Gather feedback from productions about their experiences with trainers, wranglers, and consultants.
  • Ensure learnings from past productions are memorialized and fed back into guidance and tools.
Global Expansion & Regional Alignment
  • Initiate discussions with regional Production Management teams to understand:
    • Local regulations
    • Cultural nuances
    • Available resources
    • Common use cases
  • Support the long-term development of globally scalable Animal Safety & Welfare Guidelines with regional team input.
Brand Integrity Support & Global Risk Mitigation
  • Ensure that Netflix’s approach to animal safety and welfare consistently aligns with our brand values and public-facing commitments.
  • Anticipate and mitigate reputational, ethical, and operational risks associated with animal use across a growing slate of global productions.
  • Develop scalable frameworks that support consistent decision-making across regions, formats, and production types.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to address potential issues before they become public or operational concerns.
Key Qualifications
  • 6–8+ years of experience in physical production, production operation, safety, compliance, or studio policy implementation.
  • Strong understanding of film/TV production workflows.
  • Experience with safety, compliance, animal welfare, or labor-related policy.
  • Experience working with global production teams.
  • Demonstrated experience translating policy into real-world operational workflows.
  • Exceptional cross-functional communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong documentation, process design, and change-management experience.
  • Comfort working with ambiguity and evolving frameworks.
  • Ability to present complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
