Job description

Overview
Under the general direction of the branch sports coordinator and consistent with the Christian mission and policies and procedures of the YMCA of Catawba Valley, the Gymnastics Instructor is responsible for leading gymnastics classes and instructional programs in accordance with YMCA standards. As a member of the Sports staff, the instructor's primary responsibility is to serve YMCA members and prospective members while exemplifying the highest standards of the YMCA.
Hours/Days: Expected during programming hours, Monday - Friday, Saturday and some Sundays.
Responsibilities
  • Design and prepare lesson plans that meet YMCA safety guidelines and provide age-appropriate, skill-appropriate instruction.
  • Lead gymnastics activities that promote skill development, sportsmanship, and fun.
  • Attend any required staff meetings and complete all required education and training.
  • Maintain required certifications and provide copies to the Sports Director and upload to program systems as required.
  • Take attendance and complete all required program documentation.
  • Start and end classes on time and ensure a safe and organized transition between sessions.
  • Ensure a positive learning environment through member engagement, encouragement, and support.
  • Set up, maintain, and store gymnastics equipment; ensure rooms and equipment are safe and clean.
  • Report any safety concerns, injuries, or equipment in need of repair.
  • Enforce YMCA policies, rules, and sportsmanship expectations.
  • Support and participate in special events, programs, and member promotions.
  • Communicate with members and prospective members about gymnastics programs, events, and opportunities.
  • Understand and communicate emergency procedures to participants when necessary.
  • Support the mission, vision, and direction of the YMCA of Catawba Valley.
  • Provide instruction that accommodates different skill levels and physical abilities.
  • Communicate YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Adhere to all YMCA policies and procedures, including Dress Code, Computer Usage, and Code of Conduct.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the branch sports coordinator or Manager on Duty.

Qualifications
  • Personal commitment to the YMCA cause and mission.
  • Must be 18 years of age, have high school diploma or GED.
  • Experience in gymnastics and knowledge of basic techniques
  • Must be fun loving, others focused, and hardworking.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain within required timeframe).
  • Possess a current NC driver's license.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to relate and engage positively with staff and members.
  • Supervisory experience preferred or previous experience teaching, coaching, or instructing (preferred).

  • The Gymnastics Instructor will be responsible for observing the following rules:
  • No alcohol or drugs will be used on the job at any time.
  • Report all job accidents the same day the accident happens.
  • Obtain authorization from your supervisor for all non-emergency treatments for accidents.
  • Wear seat belts at all times in company vehicles.
  • Keep the area where you work clean and neat at all times.
  • Do not remove or bypass any guards on any machinery at any time.
  • Ask your supervisor when you need additional equipment or instructions to get the job done safely.
  • Lift with your legs, not your back, and get assistance with loads over 50 pounds.
  • Advise your supervisor of any hazardous conditions.
  • Follow all other written and spoken safety rules.
