Job description

At Houston Methodist, the Public Safety/Security Shift Coordinator position is responsible for assigned activities of the Public Safety/Security department. In addition to performing the duties and functions of Security Officer, this position provides assignments, leads investigations and reviews reports for accuracy and thoroughness, staff protection, traffic control assignments, and emergency response services. This position provides Public Safety/Security to patients, visitors, physicians, and employees. This position exercises sound judgment and is self-motivated to work with limited supervision. The Public Safety/Security Shift Coordinator position must be flexible to work shift assignments, which includes all shifts and weekends. This position utilizes camera and card access systems.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
  • High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)
  • Associate’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred

EXPERIENCE
  • Two years security or related field experience
  • Healthcare experience preferred

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Required
  • Must have one of the following: • SECUR-N - Security Officer Non-Commissioned- State Licensure ◦ Submission of application within 14 days of hire date, and obtained within one year of employment • SECUR-C - Security Officer Commissioned - State Licensure ◦ Level 3 or Personal Protection Officer Level 4 licensure and
  • IAHSS - Certified Security Officer-Basic/Advanced/Supervisor (IAHSS) - International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety_PSV within 90 days and
  • DL - Driver License - State Licensure - Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation_PSV must obtain in Texas within 90 days and
  • NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) - Crisis Prevention Institute within 60 days
Preferred
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA)

  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations

  • Coordinates training, offers direction and develops skills of team members and continually assists with improving skills, performance and outcomes, orientation of department personnel. Monitors competency completion for onboarding hires, as appropriate.
  • Serves as the primary resource for staff in all areas of service that the department performs. Interfacing with department staff to provide feedback to management on team member’s performance and conduct. Collaborates/supports management for improvement of employee satisfaction, implementation of protocols and objectives with team members to result in optimization of staff performance, teamwork, patient safety, and customer service.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Secures premises and individuals by patrolling facilities; monitoring surveillance cameras and access points to permit authorized entry, ensuring all Security Officers do the same, as needed.
  • Responds to all radio dispatches as necessary, answers calls and complaints and assesses and makes recommendations as needed for all emergent situations. Leads and maintains high customer satisfaction while providing the highest level of safety and security to patients, visitors, staff and assets.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Accurately communicates and/or generates and completes reports by recording occurrences, information, observations, surveillance activities and conducting witness interviews. Coordinates appropriate hand-off communication at change of shift.
  • Responds immediately to all emergency codes and takes action appropriately.
  • Maintains a safe environment, following all policies and procedures for safety, hazardous material, emergency preparedness and HIPAA. Reports accidents promptly and corrects minor safety hazards. Communicates with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace. Participates in training, drills and actual events according to policies and procedures.
  • Conducts quality audits and documents security systems checks to ensure proper functionality.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Prevents loss and damage by reporting irregularities, informing violators of policy and procedures.
  • Prioritizes daily tasks and provides leadership to team members on effective and efficient utilization of time, minimizing incidental overtime to achieve financial target and staffing needs.
  • Utilizes and maintains HM and department equipment according to manufacturer specifications. Uses resources efficiently.

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Supports Houston Methodist and department goals and vision. Identifies and implements innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes to improve department operations. Implements actions that promote a workplace safety culture and proactively prevents workplace violence.
  • Assumes responsibility for self-growth and development by participating in in-services programs and continuing education. Participates on various council committee meetings, as requested. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management. Completes and updates the My Development Plan on an on-going basis.
