Cpa Tutor information

What is a CPA tutor?

A CPA Tutor helps students prepare for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam by explaining complex accounting concepts, providing study strategies, and offering guidance on exam structure. They may assist with topics like auditing, financial accounting, taxation, and regulation. CPA Tutors often have experience as CPAs or in accounting education and tailor their tutoring sessions to meet individual student needs.

What does a CPA tutor do?

A typical day for a CPA Tutor involves preparing lesson plans, conducting one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions—either in person or virtually—and reviewing complex accounting topics with students. You may also spend time assessing student progress, customizing study strategies, and responding to questions outside of scheduled sessions. Collaboration may occur with other tutors, academic coordinators, or curriculum developers to ensure quality instruction. This role requires continuous learning, organization, and a proactive approach to helping students master CPA exam material.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a CPA tutor?

To excel as a CPA Tutor, you need an in-depth understanding of accounting principles, CPA exam content, and typically a CPA certification or progress toward one. Familiarity with online teaching platforms, accounting software (such as QuickBooks or Excel), and CPA review course materials is important. Strong communication, patience, and the ability to motivate and adapt your teaching style to individual student needs are standout soft skills. These capabilities ensure effective instruction, engaged students, and higher success rates on the CPA exam.

Are CPAs still in high demand?

Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) remain in high demand due to ongoing needs for financial reporting, auditing, and tax services across various industries. The profession benefits from strong job stability, especially for those with specialized skills or in managerial roles, and often requires continuing education and certification renewal. Demand is expected to grow as businesses and individuals seek expert financial guidance.

How much do CPA tutors make?

CPA tutors typically earn between $25 and $75 per hour, depending on experience, location, and whether they work independently or for a tutoring company. Experienced tutors with CPA certification and specialized knowledge can charge higher rates, especially for exam preparation and advanced topics.

Job description

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced CPA to prepare individual and small business tax returns. The right candidate is accurate, efficient, and confident with federal and California tax rules, and comfortable managing a range of filings independently.

What You'll Do

•       Prepare individual tax returns (Forms 1040, Schedules A, C, and E), including multi-state filings

•       Prepare small business returns (LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, and partnership)

•       Prepare sales tax returns and support payroll reporting

•       Review client documents and identify missing or inconsistent information

•       Perform bookkeeping work that supports accurate returns: bank and credit card reconciliation, month-end and year-end close support, and chart of accounts maintenance

•       Enter and reconcile tax data in Lacerte, QuickBooks, and Midas GI

•       Review financial statements and general ledgers for accuracy

•       Analyze income and expenses to support tax planning

•       Respond to and resolve notices from the IRS, FTB, and other agencies

•       Stay current on changing tax regulations and identify planning opportunities for clients

•       Build long-term client relationships through consistent, reliable, professional communication

•       Support other firm processes during peak season as needed

What You'll Need

•       CPA with 2+ years of hands-on experience preparing individual (1040) and small business returns

•       Current working knowledge of federal and California tax law

•       Experience preparing sales tax returns and a working understanding of payroll reporting

•       Experience resolving notices from taxing authorities

•       Strong analytical and time-management skills, with a track record of meeting filing deadlines

•       Ability to work independently and manage multiple client engagements at once

•       Clear, professional communication with both clients and colleagues

•       Ability to commute reliably to our San Pedro office five days a week, including during peak season

Nice to Have

•       Prior experience at a small or boutique firm

•       Hands-on experience with Lacerte, Midas, and QuickBooks

Hours and Season

This is a full-time, on-site role. Outside of tax season, hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. From January through April, expect extended hours and some Saturdays — we want to be upfront about that so there are no surprises.

Benefits

Medical, dental, retirement plan, paid time off, continuing education or CPE reimbursement, licensing fee coverage

How to Apply

Apply through this posting with your resume. Add a brief message describing your tax preparation experience. We review applications on a rolling basis and will reach out to candidates we'd like to speak with.

Equal Opportunity

We are an equal opportunity employer. We consider all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law.

Company Description

We are a boutique, family-owned tax accounting firm with over 40 years of service in San Pedro, CA. We place an emphasis on excellent client service, responsiveness, and long-term relationships. Our clients include small business owners, medical professionals, hospitality businesses, and high-net-worth individuals.
Because we are a small team, the person in this role works directly with clients and sees engagements through from documents to filing — not a narrow slice of the process.
