The School of Nursing at California State University San Marcos accepts applications on an on-going basis for our Medical-Surgical pool of part-time lecturers.
This is a Med Surg Pool Ad for the following courses:
  • NURS 201: Introduction to Nursing Practice Laboratory
  • NURS 301: Practicum: Fundamentals of Nursing
  • NURS 221: Nursing Care of Adults I Laboratory
  • NURS 223: Nursing Care of Adults II Laboratory
  • NURS 323: Practicum: Nursing of Adults in the Acute Care Setting I
  • NURS 325: Practicum: Nursing of Adults in the Acute Care Setting II
  • NURS 321: Nursing Care of Adults III Laboratory

The clinical course instructor is responsible for preparing and teaching the clinical course with general supervision of the Clinical Course Coordinator. Duties include but are not limited to:
  1. Teaching/Role Model
    1. Provide instruction, as directed by the Clinical Course Coordinator and consistent with the syllabus, in a clear and engaging manner that is appropriate to student experience and expertise, to assist them in meeting course learning outcomes and completing required clinical hours.
    2. Provide hands-on demonstration of nursing care as needed, and ensure care is consistent with clinical agency, accreditation standards, and regulatory guidelines (California BRN, CCNE, TJC).
    3. Create topics of discussion and education information for post conferences, in coordination with the Clinical Course Coordinator, syllabus and corresponding didactic course.
    4. Always model professional nursing behavior and communication.
    5. Complete weekly evaluation of student's clinical practice and document both positive progression and areas for improvement. Utilize SoN resources to ensure student success.
    6. Notify the Clinical Course Coordinator if a student is not progressing as needed.
    7. Assist students to master course material by being available through office hours and by helping them to access other School of Nursing resources including, but not limited to, web-based technology and open/practice laboratory sessions.
    8. Utilize computer and application-based technologies as required to complete instructional and assessment duties. Includes using the assigned Cougar Course.
    9. Assign grades and maintain course/student records in accordance with the university and school requirements and deadlines.
    10. Communicate effectively with Clinical Course Coordinator, colleagues, laboratory staff, and/or clinical agency personnel to resolve issues or concerns; work effectively as part of the overall faculty team demonstrating positive and collaborative interpersonal relations to meet student needs.
    11. Attend faculty meetings.
    12. Complete all SoN orientation requirements and respond to administrative requests and in-service requirements in a timely manner.
  2. Clinical &/or Simulation Supervision
    1. Collaborate with clinical agency personnel to arrange site orientations and clinical experiences, to ensure compliance with all agency and other regulatory requirements.
    2. Prepare clinical experiences at assigned clinical site prior to student arrival to facilitate student learning and respect clinical facility norms and operations.
    3. Provide students with appropriate learning experiences whenever possible; revise clinical assignments as needed, based on student progression.
    4. Supervise students in successfully completing course requirements, including demonstrating, modeling, and assisting with the full range of patient care situations.
    5. Collaborate with the Simulation team as directed during students' simulation experience.
    6. Maintain professional practice knowledge base and skills needed to instruct learners in contemporary nursing practice for assigned course.
  3. Other duties
    1. Complete annual performance evaluations per university requirements.
    2. Other duties may include assisting the SoN with course and/or program revision/development, assisting with research, and participating in committees as an active member of the faculty.

Minimum qualifications:
  • A Master of Science in Nursing degree (MSN).
  • Medical-Surgical nursing work experience. BRN faculty requirement: Direct patient care experience within the previous five (5) years in the nursing area to which he or she is assigned, which can be met by: (A) One (1) year's continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse in the designated nursing area; or (B) One (1) academic year of registered nurse level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent that demonstrates clinical competency.
  • State licensure by California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).
  • Meet the School of Nursing's requirements regarding current immunizations and CPR licensure.
  • Per the California State University's Out-of-State Employment Policy, the CSU is prohibited from hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California. Working in the State of California is a condition of employment

Preferred qualifications:
  • A Doctorate in Nursing (DNP, PhD, or EdD with nursing education emphasis).
  • Experience teaching Medical-Surgical clinical course(s).
  • Preference will also be given to applicants with demonstrated intercultural competence with distinct groups in relation to teaching.

Salary commensurate with degree level and experience
  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5,836 - $6,240 per full-time month

The salary schedule information for the Lecturer - Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:
  • CSU Classification Salary Range Lecturer A - AY: $5,507 - $6,677 per full-time month
  • CSU Classification Salary Range Lecturer B - AY: $6,221 - $13,224 per full-time month

The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience.
