About Humane Society of North Texas
Founded in 1905, the Humane Society of North Texas is the oldest animal welfare organization in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. HSNT serves animals in need by providing services such as pet adoptions, spay/neuter surgeries and low-cost vaccinations, returning lost pets to their owners, cruelty investigations and humane euthanasia. We operate two pet adoption centers in Tarrant County as well as PetSmart and PetCo Cat Adoption Centers and an equine ranch located in Johnson County.
Essential Functions of the Position
โข Working knowledge of general animal health including TPR
โข Working knowledge of surgical procedures and instruments
โข Ability to administer and maintain general anesthesia
โข Working knowledge of controlled substances, safety, storage, and use
โข Ability to perform dental prophylaxis unassisted
โข Knowledge of radiographic positioning for various anatomical sites and ability to obtain
appropriate radiographs
โข Ability to care for, feed, monitor, medicate and perform minor treatment on animals
housed throughout the shelter as directed by veterinarian
โข Report observed health or behavior issues to Shelter Veterinarian, Intake and Wellness
Manager, Asst. Manager
โข Clean assigned areas twice daily and as needed in compliance with standard operating
procedures without error
โข Ability to evaluate animals accurately for health and behavioral issues with a wide
knowledge of common injury and illness
โข Perform venipuncture, subcutaneous, intramuscular and other injections with skill and
knowledge
โข Accurately perform diagnostic testing including but not limited to fecal testing, skin
scrapes, heartworm testing, and feline leukemia testing
โข Perform minor treatments on shelter animals such as but not limited to administering
subcutaneous fluids, placing intravenous catheters, administering oral medications, ect as
directed by veterinarian
โข Provides humane education to customers with compassion and accuracy
โข Maintain medical documentation and records by completing exam notes, medication
notes, behavioral notes, and procedures in accordance with the legal standard
โข Ability to maintain inventory of necessary medical and shelter supplies while reporting
shortages to supervisors
โข Ability to maintain medical and shelter equipment, supplies in good working condition
and report any problems or needed repairs to supervisor
โข Represent the Humane Society of North Texas by providing excellent customer service,
compassion, accuracy, and focus
โข Protect confidential information
โข Report to work at assigned start time; go to/return from breaks and lunch at assigned
times; leave work at assigned end of shift time
โข Additional tasks assigned by supervisor
Major Responsibilities
โข Maintain accurate medical records and record maintenance
โข Perform treatments as directed for animals in the care of HSNT
โข Perform physical exams on canines, felines, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds and
other exotic animals
โข Proper and safe animal handling and restraint
โข Behavioral evaluations of animals in the care of HSNT
โข Provide professional, compassionate customer service and care
โข Proper handling, use, and storage of veterinary supplies, such as, but not limited to,
vaccines, testing supplies and medications
Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities Needed to Perform the Essential Functions of this Position
โข LVT or equivalent preferred but not required
โข 3+ years of experience in a veterinary medical environment
โข Ability to learn proper intake procedures for canines, felines, rabbits, hamsters, guinea
pigs, birds and other species
โข Knows and understands the differences in diagnostic testing and preventative care given
for different age groups for a variety of species
โข Venipuncture
โข Administration of injections - SQ, IV & IM
โข Ability to place and maintain intravenous catheters
โข Ability to administer medications via all routes on a variety of species
โข Ability to perform and interpret fecal testing
โข Ability to perform and interpret superficial and deep skin scrape
โข Ability to use Wood's lamp to detect ringworm
โข Ability to accurately age both canines, felines, and various other species
โข Ability to accurately sex canines, felines and various other species
โข Ability to identify altered status for males and females for canines, felines, and various
other species
โข Ability to accurately document medical care and maintain accurate and complete medical
records
โข Completion of Fear Free Shelter Program (including bonus courses) or ability to
complete within 60 days of hire
โข Ability to identify a ide variety of illness and injury
โข Follow and respect the mission of the Humane Society of North Texas
โข Ability to meet physical demands including but not limited to using a step stool or ladder
to reach top kennels or stooping and crouching to clean bottom kennels.
โข Ability to multi-task in high stress and swift moving environment
โข Ability to follow directions with attention to detail
โข Ability to complete tasks and assignments with minimal supervision accurately and in a
timely manner
โข Ability to maintain respectful, positive working relationships with all employees at all
times
โข Proper working knowledge of situational use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
โข Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, animal handling and
behavior
โข Ability to demonstrate safe proper animal handling and restraint
โข Ability to represent the Humane Society of North Texas in a professional manner in all
situations with the public, volunteers, and staff
โข Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Humane Society of
North Texas, with volunteers, the public, and be a team player
โข Must be detail oriented and have strong time management skills
โข Ability to read, write and communicate effectively
โข Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures
