A bachelor's or master's degree in national security studies or international affairs is needed to obtain a job in counterterrorism. Specialization in a specific world region is beneficial. You must be aware of the United States national security interest and have research expertise in regards to international affairs. You also need to pass a background check, polygraph interview, and psychological and medical exams. Being bilingual or having foreign language capability is preferred. Other qualifications include an interest in international affairs, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking skills to analyze evidence.
