What is a counseling intern?

Counseling interns are students or recent graduates who are completing a supervised practical experience as part of their training to become professional counselors. They work under the guidance of licensed counselors to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, such as schools, hospitals, or community organizations. Counseling interns assist clients with various mental health, emotional, or behavioral issues while developing their skills and fulfilling licensure or graduation requirements. Their work is closely monitored to ensure ethical and effective practice.

What types of supervision and support can a counseling intern typically expect during their internship?

Counseling Interns usually receive regular supervision from licensed counselors or supervisors, often through weekly one-on-one or group meetings. This supervision provides guidance on case management, ethical considerations, and professional development. Interns also often collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including social workers, psychologists, and administrative staff, allowing them to gain a well-rounded understanding of client care. These structured supports help interns build confidence and competence as they transition into professional counselors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a counseling intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Counseling Intern, you need foundational knowledge in counseling theories, ethics, and basic assessment techniques, typically supported by enrollment in or completion of a relevant graduate program. Familiarity with documentation software, case management systems, and sometimes telehealth platforms is common. Strong active listening, empathy, and self-awareness are crucial soft skills for building trust and rapport with clients. These competencies ensure ethical practice, effective client support, and meaningful learning experiences during the internship.

Job description

Hospice Bereavement Coordinator

Join a hospice team that puts people firstโ€”patients, families, and you. At Day City Hospice, we were founded with a simple but powerful vision: create a truly patient-centered hospice experience rooted in the communities we serve. Our Ohio-based leadership team understands the importance of being localโ€”because when patients and families are facing one of life's most vulnerable moments, they deserve care that is timely, compassionate, and close to home. We also believe exceptional care starts with supporting the people who provide it. That's why we equip our team with the right tools, manageable caseloads, and a culture built on respect and collaboration. No overwhelming quotas. No sacrificing quality for volume. Just meaningful work with the time and support to do it well. If you're looking for a place where your work truly matters, you'll feel at home here.

A predictable schedule that supports workโ€“life balance Mondayโ€“Friday, 8:00 a.m.โ€“5:00 p.m. Enjoy consistent daytime hours with most evenings and weekends free, giving you the stability to plan your life outside of work.

What we offer:

  • Supportive, team-focused culture
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits starting the first of the month
  • 401(k) with generous company match
  • Generous PTO accruals
  • Paid holidays
  • Mileage reimbursement
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Employee referral program
  • Merit-based pay increases
  • Employee discount programs

What you'll do:

  • Coordinate grief counseling servicesโ€”including one-on-one support, group sessions, and ongoing follow-upโ€”to ensure families receive timely, compassionate care
  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of the Bereavement Program through annual evaluations
  • Support hospice staff experiencing work-related grief through counseling, intern supervision, and referrals
  • Provide bereavement information and referrals to community callers and maintain an up-to-date resource list
  • Assist in planning supportive services for hospice personnel, such as retreats and support groups
  • Work independently while collaborating closely with the interdisciplinary team
  • Participate in hospice meetings, in-service education, and relevant committees

What you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Experience supporting families and caregivers through grief, loss, or end-of-life situations
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of grief responses and experience providing individual and/or group counseling
  • Valid driver's license and proof of insurance

If you're passionate about helping families navigate loss with compassionโ€”and you want to be part of a team that values your expertise and well-beingโ€”Day City Hospice would love to meet you.
