Job description

Position Summary

The Cost Accountant will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and analyzing product costs across our manufacturing operations, ensuring accurate inventory valuation, and delivering the cost insight that drives operational and financial decisions.  You will analyze production costs, monitor variances between standard and actual results, and partner with operations to identify cost savings opportunities.  The Cost Accountant will maintain bills of material and routing costs in Business Central, reconcile inventory and work-in-process accounts, support the monthly close, and prepare cost reports for management. Overall, you will safeguard the accuracy of the company’s product costing and inventory records across multiple plant locations.

Responsibilities

·         Develop, maintain, and update standard costs for raw materials, labor, and overhead across all manufacturing locations

·         Analyze and report manufacturing cost variances (material, labor, and overhead absorption) and investigate root causes with operations

·         Maintain bills of material (BOM) and routing accuracy within Business Central and reconcile to actual production results

·         Perform monthly inventory valuation and reconcile raw material, work-in-process, and finished goods accounts to the general ledger

·         Support month-end and year-end close, including cost-related journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations

·         Calculate and analyze per-unit product costs and gross margins to support pricing and profitability decisions

·         Monitor and reconcile cycle counts and physical inventory results, and assist in resolving discrepancies

·         Prepare cost analysis, scrap, and labor efficiency reports for plant management and executive review

·         Assist with the annual standard cost roll and the establishment of overhead and labor rates

·         Partner with purchasing, production, and engineering to identify cost reduction and process improvement opportunities

·         Support internal and external audits with cost and inventory documentation

·         Assist with other cost accounting and finance projects as assigned

Requirements

·         Proven cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment

·         Strong understanding of standard costing, variance analysis, and inventory valuation methods

·         Experience with an ERP system, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central preferred

·         Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to build and analyze large data sets

·         Working knowledge of bills of material, routings, and product costing in a manufacturing setting

·         Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an aptitude for numbers

·         Accuracy and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities

·         Effective communication skills and the ability to partner with operations and finance teams

·         Well organized with strong time management skills and the ability to meet all assigned deadlines

·         Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred

·         Minimum two to three years of cost or manufacturing accounting experience preferred

·         CMA, CPA, or progress toward certification a plus

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, talk, hear and see.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or reach with hands and arms.  The environment is fast-paced; time pressured and requires accuracy.  The role requires periodic time on the production floor across plant locations.  The employee will regularly multi-task between projects, be required to move throughout the building, and effectively communicate.
