CES is seeking a Construction Cost Estimator based in the Washington, D.C. Metro region. The focus of this position will be cost estimating for transportation infrastructure construction projects. Job Summary:

The Construction Cost Estimator is responsible for providing detailed and accurate cost estimates for construction projects by analyzing Project Specifications and Contract Drawings, conducting research, and utilizing cost estimating software. In this role, you will work closely with project managers and engineers to ensure that all cost estimates align with project timelines, budgets, and quality standards. Your ability to understand and interpret project requirements, anticipate potential cost issues, and provide cost-saving recommendations will be crucial to your success in this position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work in a team environment for multiple clients with different estimating needs.
  • Independently prepare cost estimates from plans, drawings, and documents from the conceptual stage to final design/construction documents.
  • Develop and prepare conceptual estimates using limited preliminary design documents and information.
  • Collect and maintain historical cost data using the applicable data from past similar projects to improve the accuracy of estimates.
  • Conduct value analysis, life cycle costing, constructability analysis, cost modeling, and alternatives analysis.
  • Identify project specific risks and how these risks may affect the anticipated project cost.
  • Regularly conduct regional market analysis factoring, work scope definition, and integration of construction scheduling factors for projects across the continental U.S.
  • Assist the project management staff with the management of project scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Proficiency with estimating software such as HCSS Heavy Bid.

Required Skills / Abilities

The Construction Cost Estimator qualifications for this role include:

  • Knowledge of parametric, historic bid-based and detailed cost-based estimating techniques.
  • Proficiency with cost estimating software (HCSS Heavy Bid, RS Means CostWorks, Blue Book, VDOT’s Estimating Tools & Resources, and/or other software including advanced Excel estimating spreadsheets).
  • Knowledge of roadways, structure, and traffic engineering is required.
  • Knowledge of vertical construction means, and methods is preferred.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal contracting requirements.
  • Understanding of Contract Documents, materials performance, environmental, legal, and safety responsibilities related to construction is required.
  • Understanding of CSI format and Uniformat II classification systems is preferred.
  • Occasional travel between job sites may be required.
  • Position requires an individual who is detailed oriented.

Education and/or Experience

  • 5-7 years in a Construction Cost Estimating or similar role.
  • Degree in engineering, construction management or relevant field is preferred.
  • Contractor estimating experience in the transportation infrastructure industry is a plus.
  • Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or other similar credential is a plus.
