What is cosmetic engineering?

A Cosmetic Engineering job involves developing, testing, and improving cosmetic and personal care products such as skincare, haircare, and makeup. Cosmetic Engineers apply principles of chemistry, biology, and material science to create safe, effective, and innovative formulations. They work closely with regulatory guidelines to ensure compliance and may collaborate with marketing and manufacturing teams. This role requires a strong understanding of ingredient functionality, stability testing, and product development processes.

What does a cosmetic engineer do?

As a Cosmetic Engineer, your daily tasks often include formulating new cosmetic or personal care products, testing product stability and safety, and conducting research on innovative ingredients. You’ll collaborate closely with marketing teams, regulatory specialists, and manufacturing departments to ensure product viability from concept to launch. This role frequently involves troubleshooting formulations, maintaining thorough documentation, and ensuring products meet both company standards and government regulations. You can expect a dynamic work environment where creative problem-solving and scientific precision are both essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in cosmetic engineering?

To excel in Cosmetic Engineering, you need a solid background in chemical engineering, cosmetic science, and product formulation, usually with a relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree. Experience with laboratory equipment, regulatory compliance tools, and proficiency in systems such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) are typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong teamwork and communication skills are highly valued in this field. These abilities are critical for developing safe, effective cosmetic products and for navigating the complexities of regulatory standards and collaborative innovation.

Job description

At Ndimensions, we design and build robots from the ground up — a vertically integrated stack where the mechanics, electronics, firmware, and AI are engineered together under one roof rather than bolted together from off-the-shelf parts. We believe the best robots come from teams that own every layer, and that the hardware deserves the same craft and taste as the software.

We're looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to take our robotic platforms the last mile — from working prototype to a polished, manufacturable product that ships to customers and feels premium in their hands. You'll own the transition from prototype to production, the design of our cosmetic plastic enclosures, and the fit, finish, and reliability of the finished machine.

What You'll Do
  • Drive the transition from prototype to production, working directly with vendors, contract manufacturers, and machine shops to get parts made to spec, on time, and at cost.
  • Design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA) across the whole machine — with particular ownership of cosmetic plastic parts.
  • Design robotic mechanical systems end to end: manipulators, joints, drivetrains, chassis, mounts, enclosures, and structural components.
  • Own the design lifecycle in 3D CAD — modeling, tolerance analysis (GD&T), drawings, prototyping, and bring-up.
  • Build, test, and iterate on hardware in the lab — fabrication, assembly, and hands-on debugging of mechanical and electromechanical issues.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, firmware, and AI engineers to integrate motors, sensors, and compute into cohesive robotic assemblies.
  • Run structural, thermal, and mechanical analysis (FEA where appropriate) to validate designs before committing to hardware.
What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of professional experience in mechanical engineering, ideally on robotic, electromechanical, or precision hardware products.
  • Strong proficiency with 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks.
  • Hands-on experience with motor and actuator integration and mechanical packaging.
  • Demonstrated experience taking mechanical designs from prototype through to manufacturing and production.
  • Experience designing plastic parts for molding (cast urethane and/or injection), including cosmetic surfaces and working directly with molders.
  • Solid grounding in mechanism design, tolerance analysis, materials selection, and design for manufacturability.
  • A builder's instinct — comfortable in the lab fabricating, assembling, and debugging real hardware, not just designing on screen.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Bonus (Not Required)
  • Experience with robotic manipulators, actuators, or force/torque-controlled mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with motor control and electromechanical integration alongside electrical and firmware teams.
  • A track record of shipping premium consumer or hardware products where fit, finish, and reliability mattered.
  • Prior work in a startup or fast-paced hardware prototyping environment.
