PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a Department of Correction facility or district this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the repair, monitoring and installation of plumbing, heating and steamfitting activities.\r\n

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

\r\n\r\n Plans, lays out and schedules work;\r\n Instructs inmates in methods and techniques of measuring, cutting, threading and installing pipes, valves, gauges, and other fixtures involving the use of hand tools, pipe cutters, and pipe threading and bending machines;\r\n Determines defects and maintains piping system for steam, gas, water, air and pressure;\r\n Trains inmates in reading blueprints and schematic drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installations;\r\n Performs preventative maintenance;\r\n Utilizes troubleshooting techniques to address problems with plumbing and steamfitting systems;\r\n Repairs fire protection systems;\r\n Performs air quality testing;\r\n Acts as liaison with outside vendors, contractors and agency staff;\r\n Works on specialized equipment relating to trade area;\r\n Performs work on high-pressure steam equipment;\r\n Tests and monitors pumps, boilers and heating systems;\r\n Keeps records and makes necessary reports;\r\n Maintains custody and discipline and evaluates the performance of each inmate assigned to work area;\r\n May perform supplemental duties related to other trade disciplines based on experience, knowledge, skills and agency needs;\r\n May purchase equipment;\r\n May physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist security forces in emergencies;\r\n May be required to operate a motor vehicle;\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

\r\n Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, tools and equipment involved in plumbing and steamfitting trades;\r\n Knowledge of\r\n \r\n building codes;\r\n maintenance and repair of sprinkler systems;\r\n operation of institutional steam boilers and heating systems;\r\n \r\n \r\n Skills\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;\r\n oral and written communication skills;\r\n \r\n \r\n Ability to\r\n \r\n plan, layout and schedule maintenance assignments;\r\n operate and interpret computerized and automated control systems;\r\n maintain records and prepare reports;\r\n read blueprints and schematics;\r\n work in confined spaces;\r\n troubleshoot issues relating to plumbing and steamfitting;\r\n instruct inmates or other employees in techniques and skills of plumbing and steamfitting;\r\n perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations;\r\n \r\n \r\n Supervisory ability.\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience as a plumber and/or steamfitter.\r\n\r\n\r\nNOTE: Based on an individual's technical experience, the length of credited service will be determined at the discretion of facility management.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at a highly skilled level.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

\r\n\r\n Graduation from a vocational or technical school in the trade may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.\r\n Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year-for-year basis.\r\n\r\n\r\n

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

\r\n\r\n Experience with repair and maintenance of commercial plumbing systems and associated controls.\r\n Valid P1 (Unlimited Plumbing Contractor) or P2 (Unlimited Journeyperson Plumber) License.\r\n\r\n\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to respond to after-hour emergencies as requested by facility supervisors.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.\r\n\r\n\r\n

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.\r\n

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.\r\n A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.\r\n\r\n\r\n

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates who have access to tools of the trade as weapons and may be exposed to the danger and discomfort associated with tools and machinery used in the trade.\r\n
