The Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) is the agency responsible for corrections in the U.S. State of Connecticut. The agency operates 13 correctional facilities. It has its headquarters in Wethersfield. The DOC protects public safety by ensuring offenders serve their sentences of imprisonments in facilities that are safe, human, and provide re-entry programming. The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction is a unified system; all sentenced and un-sentenced offenders are supervised by the DOC. The Department also provides supervision for offenders on parole, community release, and other discretionary release programs. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a Department of Correction facility or district this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for inmates and/or independently performing a full range of tasks in general maintenance and repair of buildings and maintenance systems.\r\n
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
\r\n\r\n Performs a variety of general building repairs and maintenance such as interior and exterior painting, electrical, plumbing or mechanical maintenance, masonry and carpentry;\r\n Maintains and repairs doors, gates and locks;\r\n Paints structures, installs and replaces glass, repairs plaster and completes masonry work to walls, walks and floors;\r\n Replaces or repairs defective electrical equipment such as switches and lighting fixtures;\r\n Maintains plumbing and power distribution systems;\r\n Assists in general maintenance of high-pressure steam and boiler systems;\r\n Periodically inspects equipment, makes adjustments and repairs, and performs preventive maintenance tasks;\r\n Assists in detecting plumbing defects;\r\n Defines repairs needed and works with contractors in making repairs;\r\n Repairs and maintains machinery such as motors, engines, compressors or other mechanical equipment;\r\n Trains, supervises and maintains custody and discipline of a group of assigned inmates;\r\n Applies general safety standards while performing maintenance and repair work;\r\n Provides staff training and assistance;\r\n May perform supplemental duties related to other trade disciplines based on experience, knowledge, skills and agency needs;\r\n May be required to restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist security forces in emergencies;\r\n May use welding equipment;\r\n May be required to operate a motor vehicle;\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
\r\n Considerable knowledge of building materials and methods of repair and maintenance;\r\n Knowledge of basic principles and techniques of plumbing, electrical repair, carpentry, painting, mechanical maintenance, and masonry;\r\n Skills\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;\r\n oral and written communication skills;\r\n \r\n \r\n Considerable ability to recognize maintenance problems and determine corrective operations needed;\r\n Ability to\r\n \r\n operate and interpret computerized and automated control systems;\r\n plan, layout and schedule assignments and estimate cost of jobs;\r\n maintain records and prepare reports;\r\n read blueprints and diagrams;\r\n instruct inmates in techniques and skill of general maintenance activities;\r\n perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations;\r\n \r\n \r\n Supervisory ability.\r\n\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of large buildings and utility services.\r\n\r\n\r\nNOTE: Based on an individual's technical experience, the length of credited service will be determined at the discretion of facility management.\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General Experience on a year-for-year basis.\r\n
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
\r\n A construction or trade license;\r\n A welding certification; and\r\n Experience working in a correctional facility.\r\n\r\n
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to respond to after-hour emergencies as requested by facilities supervisors.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.\r\n\r\n\r\n
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.\r\n A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.\r\n\r\n\r\n
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates who have access to tools of the trades as weapons and may be exposed to considerable danger and discomfort associated with tasks and machinery used in the trades.\r\n
