Core Blockchain Developer information

What is a core blockchain developer?

Core Blockchain Developers are specialized software engineers responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the foundational architecture of blockchain systems. They create and optimize the core protocols, consensus algorithms, and security mechanisms that enable decentralized networks to operate effectively. Unlike application developers who build on top of blockchain platforms, core developers work directly on the blockchain’s underlying infrastructure. Their work ensures the network’s efficiency, scalability, and security, making them essential for the evolution and stability of blockchain technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a core blockchain developer?

To thrive as a Core Blockchain Developer, you need deep expertise in computer science, cryptography, and distributed systems, often supported by a degree in a related field and experience with blockchain protocols. Proficiency with programming languages such as C++, Go, or Rust, as well as familiarity with blockchain frameworks and tools like Ethereum and Hyperledger, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with other developers and addressing complex technical challenges. These skills ensure secure, efficient, and scalable blockchain infrastructure that meets the needs of users and organizations.

What are some common challenges core blockchain developers face when working on protocol-level changes?

Core Blockchain Developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring backward compatibility during protocol upgrades, maintaining network security, and achieving consensus among distributed stakeholders. Testing and deploying changes require rigorous peer review and extensive collaboration with other developers and the broader community to prevent disruptions. Additionally, developers must stay updated with evolving cryptographic standards and scalability solutions to keep the blockchain secure and efficient.

What is the difference between Core Blockchain Developer vs Blockchain Software Engineer?

AspectCore Blockchain DeveloperBlockchain Software Engineer
Primary FocusDeveloping and maintaining blockchain protocols, consensus algorithms, and core infrastructureBuilding blockchain applications, smart contracts, and user-facing solutions
Required SkillsDeep understanding of blockchain architecture, cryptography, consensus mechanismsProficiency in programming languages, smart contract development, API integration
Work EnvironmentTypically in blockchain development teams, R&D, or core protocol projectsIn software development teams, creating decentralized apps and tools
Industry UsageUsed by blockchain protocol projects, core infrastructure providersUsed by dApp developers, fintech companies, and blockchain startups

While both roles require blockchain knowledge, Core Blockchain Developers focus on building and optimizing the underlying blockchain protocols, whereas Blockchain Software Engineers develop applications and smart contracts on top of existing blockchain platforms.

Company
Braintrust is a global talent network that connects top independent professionals with leading companies for high-quality, flexible work. We help organizations hire skilled talent faster while giving professionals access to vetted opportunities with innovative teams. Job description
Role Overview

We are looking for a highly technical Technical Analyst / Associate to join our team.

This role is ideal for a strong software engineer who is interested in applying their technical skills within a venture investing environment focused on B2B technology, FinTech, and DeepTech.

Hands-on software engineering ability is the most important qualification for this role. Prior venture capital or investment experience is not required and can be learned on the job. Experience or demonstrated interest in investing, startups, or private markets is a plus.

The role combines software development, technical diligence, market research, and support for portfolio companies.

Software Development & Technical Ownership

A core part of the role will be building, improving, and maintaining the firm's proprietary software and technical infrastructure.

You will:

  • Develop, maintain, and improve the firm's proprietary software platform, Lighthouse.
  • Build and integrate internal tools that support data-driven investing, sourcing, diligence, and portfolio management.
  • Work across backend, frontend, infrastructure, APIs, and data integrations as needed.
  • Maintain and improve application reliability, deployments, monitoring, security, and infrastructure.
  • Evaluate new technologies and tools that can improve the firm's internal workflows.
  • Troubleshoot application, infrastructure, deployment, and integration issues.
Technical Diligence

You will use your engineering background to help evaluate B2B technology companies being considered for investment.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Reviewing software architecture and technical infrastructure.
  • Evaluating APIs, integrations, vendors, and implementation requirements.
  • Assessing product roadmaps and technical scalability.
  • Helping evaluate product and technology differentiation and IP.
  • Identifying technical risks and opportunities.
  • Working with the investment team to translate technical findings into clear diligence conclusions.

Prior investment diligence experience is not required. We will train the right technical candidate on our investment process and diligence frameworks.

Market Research & Investment Support

As you develop within the role, you will also support the investment team with:

  • Market analysis and opportunity identification.
  • Research into emerging technology sectors and investment themes.
  • Market mapping and initial screening of potential investments.
  • Customer, founder, and industry research.
  • Participation in conferences, incubators, university demo days, and other startup ecosystems.
  • Development of investment materials, including Investment Memos and Scorecards.
  • Analysis of market size, product-market fit, competitive positioning, business metrics, and investment risks.
Portfolio Company Support

You may also work directly with portfolio companies on areas such as:

  • Product and technical strategy.
  • Technical architecture and integrations.
  • Talent and technology needs.
  • Business development and market expansion.
  • Portfolio reporting and performance metrics.
  • Future financing and fundraising support.
What We're Looking For
  • Approximately 2–4 years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong hands-on programming experience, ideally including Python, JavaScript, and/or PHP.
  • Experience developing and maintaining web applications.
  • Comfortable working across different parts of the technology stack rather than specializing in only one narrow area.
  • Experience with some combination of:
    • Linux / Ubuntu
    • AWS, including EC2, S3, IAM, Security Groups, and backups
    • Docker / Docker Compose
    • Nginx, reverse proxies, SSL, and DNS
    • Cloudflare
    • MySQL or similar relational databases
    • Git / GitHub
    • APIs and third-party integrations
    • Deployment and rollback processes
    • Credential and secrets management
    • Monitoring, backups, security, and incident troubleshooting
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to understand unfamiliar technical systems quickly and form independent opinions about them.
  • Interest in working closely with founders, investors, and technology companies.
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical field preferred.
Nice to Have

The following are helpful, but not required:

  • Experience working at a FinTech, DeepTech, AI, cybersecurity, blockchain, quantum, or B2B software company.
  • Venture capital, private equity, investment banking, investment research, or other investing experience.
  • Experience conducting technical or commercial due diligence.
  • Exposure to early-stage startups, accelerators, incubators, angel investing, or university venture ecosystems.
  • Experience with market research, investment analysis, or financial modeling.
  • Interest in venture capital and private markets.
  • Spanish or Japanese language skills.
Who Might Be a Great Fit

You may be a strong fit if you are currently a Software Engineer, Backend Engineer, Full Stack Engineer, Platform Engineer, or Technical/Data Engineer and are excited about using your technical background to evaluate and work with emerging technology companies.

You do not need to already be an investor. We are looking for someone with strong engineering fundamentals, intellectual curiosity, and an interest in learning the investment side of the business.
