What is core assembly?

Core assembly refers to the process of constructing the core components used in manufacturing, most commonly in foundries for metal casting. Workers in core assembly build sand or ceramic cores and molds that shape the internal cavities of metal parts during casting. The job requires attention to detail, precision, and knowledge of safety procedures to ensure quality and consistency in the final products. Core assembly is essential in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and machinery manufacturing. Technicians often use hand tools, machines, and specialized adhesives or coatings as part of the assembly process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a core assembly worker?

To thrive as a Core Assembly worker, you need manual dexterity, attention to detail, basic mechanical aptitude, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with assembly line tools, blueprints, and quality control systems is typically required, and some positions may prefer certifications in manufacturing or safety. Strong teamwork, problem-solving, and time management skills help individuals excel in fast-paced production environments. These competencies are crucial for ensuring efficient, accurate, and safe assembly of components, directly impacting product quality and operational productivity.

What are some common challenges faced in a core assembly role and how can they be overcome?

Core Assembly professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining high precision under tight deadlines and adapting to frequent changes in production schedules. Ensuring quality while assembling intricate components requires strong attention to detail and adherence to safety standards. Effective communication with team members and cross-department collaboration can help resolve issues quickly and minimize downtime. Continuous learning and staying updated on new assembly techniques or equipment can also help overcome these challenges and enhance job performance.

Job description

Winpak Lane is seeking a Mechanical Assembler to join our Assembly team in Rialto, California. You will build and align custom packaging machinery from blueprints, verify component quality, and help prepare equipment for successful shipment. This is a hands-on opportunity for a mechanically skilled professional who enjoys precision work, troubleshooting, and seeing complex equipment come together.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assemble complex packaging machinery and options from drawings, work instructions, and specifications.
  • Fit, align, adjust, and verify components within required tolerances; confirm final alignment before shipment.
  • Inspect starting materials and assembled parts, identify shortages or defects, and communicate issues promptly.
  • Install mechanical systems such as chains, pulleys, gearboxes, pneumatic components, regulators, and air lines.
  • Use hand and light power tools, calipers, micrometers, scales, and other measuring devices safely and accurately.
  • Troubleshoot build issues and partner with Engineering, Planning, Fabrication, and Production to resolve them.
  • Follow safety, personal protective equipment, 5S, and continuous-improvement requirements; maintain an organized work area.
  • Support training and increasingly complex machine builds based on demonstrated skill level.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2+ year of mechanical assembly, industrial maintenance, field service, or related hands-on experience.
  • Ability to read blueprints, diagrams, manuals, and written work instructions.
  • Working knowledge of basic shop math and precision measuring tools.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted, use ladders, work at heights up to 25 feet, and squat or sit for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Trade-school training in mechanical assembly, machining, or a related technical field.
  • Experience with packaging machinery, pneumatics, tight-tolerance assembly, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, or machine rebuilds.
  • Experience with material requirements planning software and basic computer transactions.

Level Placement
Placement from Level I through Senior is based on relevant experience and demonstrated capability. Higher levels require independent completion of increasingly complex W18, W25, W630, option, cup-machine, or rebuild work, along with technical leadership and training responsibilities.
Additional Details
  • Full-time, non-exempt position based 100% onsite in Rialto, California.
  • Schedule and shift will be confirmed during the recruitment process; overtime may be required based on business needs.
  • Travel is generally not required.
  • Work is performed in a manufacturing environment with noise, moving equipment, flying debris, temperature changes, and required personal protective equipment.

Compensation
Compensation range: $24.00- $25.00. Pay will be determined based on the candidate's experience, demonstrated skill level, and other job-related factors.
