Job description

Are you a passionate nursing leader with a heart for compassionate end-of-life care? We are looking for an experienced and dedicated Director of Nursing to lead our hospice clinical team and make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and families during life's most important moments.

About the Role

The Hospice Director of Nursing (DON) provides overall clinical leadership, supervision, and management of hospice nursing services. You will ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and accreditation standards. This is a leadership role with significant impact - guiding an interdisciplinary team, driving quality improvement, and championing compassionate care at every level.

What You'll Do

As the Director of Nursing, you will provide hands-on clinical leadership across all hospice services - setting the standard for compassionate, evidence-based end-of-life care. You will monitor patient care plans and clinical outcomes, lead Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) meetings, and ensure that all assessments, care plans, and documentation are completed accurately and on time.

Staff Management

You will recruit, hire, train, and mentor clinical staff, conducting performance reviews and competency assessments to keep your team operating at its best. You will maintain appropriate staffing levels to meet patient care needs while building a collaborative, patient-focused culture where every team member feels supported and valued.

Regulatory Compliance

You will ensure full compliance with Medicare Conditions of Participation (CoPs), Texas state regulations, and all applicable hospice standards - keeping clinical documentation audit-ready and preparing the organization for regulatory surveys at any time.

Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement (QAPI)

You will lead QAPI activities by tracking quality metrics and reviewing incident reports, complaints, and adverse events to identify trends. From there, you will develop and implement targeted improvement strategies that elevate both patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes.

Operations & Leadership

You will partner with the leadership team to support census growth, contribute to budgeting and resource decisions, and participate in the administrative on-call rotation - providing after-hours clinical guidance when it matters most.

Education & Licensure

Candidates must be graduates of an accredited nursing program, with a BSN strongly preferred. A current Texas Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing is required, along with a valid driver's license and reliable transportation to support patient visits and team engagements across the service area.

Experience

The ideal candidate brings a minimum of three years of hospice nursing experience, paired with at least two years in a leadership or management capacity. A strong working knowledge of Medicare hospice regulations and Conditions of Participation is essential, as is hands-on experience with electronic medical records and hospice-specific documentation systems.
