This position is located onsite in Gadsden, Alabama.
Job Overview
Assists Cook with meal preparation in accordance with preplanned menus within established budgets, and in compliance with government and management directives. Acts as lead worker for Culinary Arts Trainees and Center Work-Based Learning students.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties:
  • Prepares vegetables by washing, peeling, coring, grinding, shredding, or chopping, for use in entrees.
  • Prepares meats for cooking by washing, trimming, boning, cutting, cubing, or forming into patties or loaves.
  • Cooks or bakes items, which require minimum preparation.
  • Helps cook and serve meals, ensuring that prepared foods are held and served at proper temperatures, and all left over foods are properly chilled and stored.
  • Keeps food service area, tables, floors, and equipment clean and sanitary.
  • Prepares desserts as needed.
  • Assists with the appropriate storage of dry goods and freezer items.
  • Promote and cultivate positive customer service.
  • Maintain accountability of students and property; adhere to safety practices.
  • Cultivate and maintain a climate on Center which is free of harassment, intimidation, and disrespect to provide a safe place for staff and students to work and learn.
  • Promote student attainment of career success standards through modeling appropriate skills, mentoring students, monitoring skill acquisition and intervening when inappropriate behavior is observed.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform all other duties as requested.

Job Requirements
Mandatory:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Six (6) months experience in the food service industry.
  • Must be able to obtain a Food Handler's certificate within 30 days of employment.
  • Successfully pass background check and drug test required on the contract.

Preferred:
  • Previous experience in a commercial or institutional kitchen.

Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in a fast-paced cafeteria or industrial kitchen environment.
  • The position requires exposure to varying temperatures, including heat from ovens and cold conditions when accessing refrigerators or freezers.
  • The work area may occasionally be noisy due to kitchen equipment and food service operations.

Physical Requirements:
  • This position requires the employee to be able to frequently required to sit, stand, walk and talk or hear.
  • The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Work somewhat close to other people, such as when sharing office space.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
