What is conversion rate optimisation?

Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) is the process of increasing the percentage of website visitors who take a desired action, such as making a purchase, signing up for a newsletter, or filling out a form. This is achieved by analyzing user behavior, testing different website elements, and implementing changes to improve user experience and encourage conversions. CRO involves strategies like A/B testing, improving website design, optimizing calls to action, and minimizing barriers to conversion. The ultimate goal is to maximize the effectiveness of a website and increase return on investment from existing traffic.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a conversion rate optimisation specialist?

To thrive as a Conversion Rate Optimisation Specialist, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of digital marketing principles, and experience with A/B testing and data interpretation, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with tools such as Google Analytics, Optimizely, Hotjar, and other CRO platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, creativity, and problem-solving abilities help you collaborate with teams and design effective experiments. These skills are vital for increasing website conversions, enhancing user experience, and driving business growth through data-driven decisions.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in conversion rate optimisation roles?

One common challenge in Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) is balancing quick wins with long-term strategic improvements, as stakeholders often expect immediate results from experiments and A/B tests. Additionally, CRO specialists frequently need to navigate conflicting opinions between marketing, design, and development teams while ensuring that data-driven recommendations are implemented effectively. Another challenge is obtaining sufficient traffic and statistically significant results, which can limit the speed and confidence of decision-making. Successful CRO professionals thrive by communicating clearly, prioritizing impactful tests, and fostering a culture of experimentation within their organizations.

Fanatics has an established database of over 100 million global sports fans; a global partner network with approximately 900 sports properties, including major national and international professional sports leagues, players associations, teams, colleges, college conferences and retail partners, 2,500 athletes and celebrities, and 200 exclusive athletes; and over 2,000 retail locations, including its Lids retail stores. Our more than 22,000 employees are committed to relentlessly enhancing the fan experience and delighting sports fans globally.
About the Company
Fanatics Collect is seeking an experienced Principal Product Manager to lead the eCommerce strategy and execution for Topps.com. As the owner of this direct-to-consumer channel, you'll be responsible for evolving our Shopify-based storefront into a best-in-class destination for collectors and fans. You'll work cross-functionally across design, engineering, marketing, operations, and business teams to build experiences that are both customer-centric and revenue-generating.
This is a high-impact role for a product leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment, understands the nuances of eCommerce and digital merchandising, and can balance long-term vision with rapid iteration.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own the product vision, roadmap, and execution for Topps.com, spanning both front-end user experiences and back-end operational tools. This includes Topps.com websites (US and international), Topps section inside the Fanatics Collect native application and 3rd party ecommerce channels (TikTok, Fanatics Commerce...).
  • Lead Shopify-based platform evolution and customization to support both limited-edition product drops and evergreen merchandising strategies.
  • Partner with marketing and growth teams to drive conversion, retention, and site traffic through optimized UX, content placement, and personalization.
  • Collaborate with engineering and design partners to deliver seamless, mobile-first customer journeys from discovery through checkout and fulfillment.
  • Define and monitor key metrics (e.g., conversion rate, average order value, cart abandonment) to guide decision-making and assess business impact.
  • Proactively identify friction in the purchase journey and lead initiatives to enhance site performance, navigation, search, and merchandising capabilities.
  • Serve as the internal subject matter expert for Shopify and consumer eCommerce experience, helping guide cross-functional planning and investments.
  • Help establish a culture of experimentation through A/B testing and rapid iteration grounded in user insights and behavioral data.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 7 years of product management experience, ideally focused on consumer eCommerce, Shopify, or other digital retail platforms.
  • Proven ability to manage consumer-facing product development from inception to launch, across multiple channels, with a keen eye for user experience and commercial outcomes.
  • Highly analytical and fluent in using data to inform roadmap decisions, evaluate experiments, and uncover optimization opportunities.
  • Strong communicator and collaborator, with the ability to synthesize complex requirements and align diverse stakeholders.
  • Comfortable operating in a matrixed, cross-functional environment with fast-moving priorities.
  • Familiarity with SEO, conversion rate optimization (CRO), and digital merchandising best practices.
  • Passion for collectibles, sports, or fandom-driven communities is a plus.
