Job description

Job Description
Job Description

A leading manufacturer of engineered process equipment is seeking an experienced Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to join their engineering team. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys a combination of controls design, instrumentation selection, project engineering, and hands-on support throughout the equipment lifecycleโ€”from proposal through commissioning.

Must-Have Experience

To be considered, candidates must have experience supporting the design of packaged process equipment (OEM or skid-mounted systems). This includes specifying instrumentation and controls, interpreting customer specifications, developing P&IDs, and coordinating control system requirements for engineered equipment packages.

Experience with packaged systems used in industries such as Oil & Gas, Water/Wastewater, Chemical Processing, Power Generation, Industrial Gases, or similar process industries is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Review customer specifications and define instrumentation and controls requirements for custom equipment packages.
  • Develop technical specifications for third-party control system suppliers and manage deliverables throughout the project.
  • Design complete instrumentation and control systems, including:
    • P&IDs
    • Control schematics
    • Wiring diagrams
    • Logic diagrams
    • Cable schedules
  • Select PLC hardware, instrumentation, valves, sensors, and other control components based on project requirements.
  • Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs) and component specifications.
  • Create 2D and 3D AutoCAD drawings, including general arrangement layouts.
  • Support proposal development by providing technical evaluations, cost estimates, schedules, and equipment recommendations.
  • Work closely with Project Managers, Mechanical Engineers, and Designers to ensure project scope is clearly defined and executed.
  • Provide engineering support during procurement by evaluating instrumentation and control system alternatives for cost, lead time, and performance.
  • Design instrumentation layouts, cable routing, junction boxes, conduit, and cable tray systems in accordance with Oil & Gas industry standards.
  • Develop PLC programs, HMI applications, sequence logic, and PID control strategies.
  • Support manufacturing during equipment assembly, inspection, calibration, loop checks, and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
  • Provide commissioning and startup support at customer sites as needed.
  • Develop operating procedures, validation protocols, and acceptance test plans.
  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering standards, product standardization, efficiency, and design processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams while providing regular project status updates to internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Instrumentation & Controls Engineering experience, preferably supporting custom equipment or industrial manufacturing.
  • Experience specifying and designing instrumentation and control systems for packaged process equipment.
  • Strong understanding of Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), instrumentation selection, and control system architecture.
  • Experience reviewing customer specifications and developing technical requirements for instrumentation and controls systems.
  • Knowledge of hazardous area classifications and applicable electrical/instrumentation design practices.
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as API, NEC, NFPA, IEEE, and IEC.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD (2D/3D) and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work across engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and customers.
  • Willingness to travel domestically up to 25%.

Benefits & Perks

The company offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support employees both personally and professionally, including:

  • Multiple medical plan options
  • Dental and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Paid time off and holidays
