Job description


We are looking for a talented Electronic Systems Technical Specialist - Hardware to join our Cummins Inc. team in Seymour, IN.
The Electronic Systems Technical Specialist will serve as a technical leader responsible for the development, integration, validation, and continuous improvement of electrical and electronic hardware systems. This role will lead complex engineering projects from concept through production, drive resolution of challenging technical issues, influence hardware design and validation strategies, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and suppliers to deliver high-quality solutions. The ideal candidate is a highly experienced hardware engineer with deep expertise in electronic system design, product development, circuit analysis, troubleshooting, and verification and validation activities. They will have a proven track record of leading technical projects, mentoring others, navigating ambiguity, and making sound engineering decisions that positively impact product performance, quality, cost, and delivery.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
  • Lead the development and integration of electrical and electronic hardware to ensure reliable product performance across diverse customer applications.
  • Drive resolution of complex hardware issues by identifying causal mechanisms and implementing robust, data-driven solutions.
  • Advance hardware development processes by applying structured problem-solving, requirements analysis, and proven design methodologies.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and internal engineering teams to deliver high-quality prototype hardware aligned with project needs.
  • Influence hardware requirements, design decisions, and validation strategies that impact functionality, cost, and delivery timelines.
  • Provide independent leadership of cross-functional projects and ownership of complex components or systems with significant ambiguity.
  • Strengthen functional excellence by improving work processes, systems, and engineering practices across the business unit.
  • Mentor engineers, technicians, and student employees to build capability and ensure consistent, high-quality technical execution.

Responsibilities
To be successful in this role, you will need the following:
  • Deep expertise in electrical and electronic system design, including mechatronics, controllers, sensors, actuators, and hardware architecture.
  • Strong capability in analytical thinking, structured problem-solving, and applying modeling, simulation, and validation methods to guide product decisions.
  • Proven leadership in managing complex technical projects, aligning stakeholders, and driving results in fast-moving engineering environments.
  • Effective communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills to influence technical direction and support cross-functional execution.
  • Ability to navigate complexity, make sound decisions, and apply resourcefulness to overcome technical and project challenges.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:
College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required. Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles. This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
Experience:
Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred
Qualifications
Additional Responsibilities & Preferred Key Competencies:
  • The ideal candidate for this role will have significant experience in electrical and electronic hardware development, typically gained through 8 years or more of relevant engineering experience, including demonstrated success in a Senior Engineer, Lead Engineer, or equivalent technical leadership role. This experience should include product development, design verification and validation, circuit analysis, troubleshooting, and leading complex engineering projects from concept through production. Experience leading complex hardware development projects, mentoring engineers, and driving technical decision-making across cross-functional teams is strongly preferred.
  • Leads multiple cross-functional projects from planning through completion, ensuring alignment on scope, milestones, risks, and deliverables.
  • Applies preferred tools and systems such as circuit simulation, DFMEA/PFMEA, FTA, schematic capture, and compliance matrices to strengthen hardware design quality.
  • Utilizes preferred technical capabilities in product failure mode avoidance, modeling, simulation, verification, and validation to enhance system reliability and performance.
  • Demonstrates preferred strengths in communication, teamwork, collaboration, and problem-solving, consistently applying quality decision-making in complex engineering environments.
  • Coordinates work across technicians and engineers, ensuring accurate documentation, knowledge transfer, and disciplined execution of development processes.
  • Operates as a recognized specialist in electrical and electronic hardware, contributing advanced technical insight and guiding system-level decisions.
  • Applies preferred project leadership skills to manage timelines, track metrics, mitigate risks, and support organizational change initiatives.
  • Values diverse perspectives, builds strong networks, and adapts effectively to evolving technical and project demands.
