OVERVIEWย 

Element Critical isย seekingย to add aย Data Centerย Controls Engineerย to theย Facilityย Operationsย team,ย who aligns with our company values of accountability, integrity, grit, and problem-solving.ย 

This positionย participates in a 24/7 operational support model. DC Controls Engineer share responsibility for after-hours support through a weekly rotating on-call schedule that is distributed to all participating on-site team members and managed on a monthly rotation basis.ย 

This role willย be responsible forย all thingsย related to controls, including but not limited toย designย standards,ย implementation,ย andย project management, andย maintainingย theย companyย buildingย electricalย power management systems (EPMS),ย automation systems (BAS),ย andย buildingย management systemsย (BMS)ย for allย Data Centers.ย You will develop new processesย and standards while innovating in the control space.ย Overallย desireย is to createย reliableย and efficient controls (BAS, BMS, EPMS) thatย serveย Operations and Customers.ย 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:ย 

  • Generalย 
    • Collaborateย with design andย operations teams to develop and enforce automation logic, ensuring systems meetย operational standards.ย 
    • Manage cross-functional partnerships with internalย operations andย engineering teams to troubleshoot complex control loop issues.ย  Utilize 3rdย party vendorsย andย contractorsย to resolve issues.ย 
    • Assist in procurement related activities including request for quotation/proposals, responding to request for information,ย assist inย review of vendors proposals and submittal processing.ย ย 
    • Attend project related meetings, coordinate with project leaders,ย and regularly report status to management.ย 
    • Frequent visits toย data centers to troubleshootย issues andย superviseย 3rdย partyย vendor's work to ensure compliance with the scope, design, andย applicable local codes.ย 
  • Create and maintainย SOOs andย documentation of existing controls infrastructure.ย 
    • Assemble library of I&C design documents, submittals, as-builts, and O&Msย 
    • Controls equipment inventory: sensors, valves, controllers, etcย 
    • Vendors, contacts, contracts, warranties, licenses, entitlements, passwords, 3rdย party network accessย 
  • Initial and periodic auditย ofย existing implementationsย 
    • Security risksย 
    • Operations risks (reliability, SLA risks)ย

    • Lead QA/QC during implementationย 
    • Lead the commissioning life-cycle for data centerย BAS, BMS and electromechanicalย systems,ย ensuring validation of Buildingย Automation, Buildingย Management, and EPMย System to controlย and monitorย HVACย and electricalย infrastructureย effectively.ย 
      • Ensure commissioning effectivenessย byย reviewingย scripts,ย monitoringย execution, andย reviewingย reports & issuesย 
    • Lead owner's punch and follow-upย 
    • Vet closeoutย and transition to operationsย 
  • SME and leader for internal support and customer integrations (similar to IT).ย ย Collaborate with and support Facility Ops teamsย toย enableย local control within the I&C sandbox for reliability,ย reportingย forย efficiency and operations initiatives, as well as managing all training, documentationย 
    • Implement and support customer integrations as directed by Customer Ops.ย 
    • Review results and action items from the quarterly maintenances for BMS andย electrical systemsย and take actions to get them resolved.ย 
  • Operate and maintain all controls hardware & softwareย 
    • Oversee the testing and tuning of mechanical plant controls (chillers, cooling towers,ย AHUs), ensuring data visibility and system redundancy are maintained through robustย SCADA implementations.ย 
    • Break-fix, preventive maintenance, ongoing tuning and adjustments.ย 
    • Participate in on-call scheduleย as secondary escalationย to provide immediate BMS andย electrical systemย technical support to in-service data centers.ย 
    • Troubleshoot and perform Root Cause Analysis or Corrective Action forย BAS,ย BMS andย ย EPMS systemย related issues inย Element Critical'sย data centers.ย 
    • Per-site and global plant performance reportingย 
    • Develop and maintain maintenance program for all controls equipmentย 
      • Hardware PM (calibrating sensors, stroking valves, etc)ย 
      • Platform PM (patches asย appropriate, backups, etc.)ย 
    • Specify ITย andย networkย resources required by controls applicationsย 
    • Configure and manage EPMS,ย BAS,ย and BMSย systemย alarm frameworks,ย optimizeย alarm logic, prioritization, and thresholds to reduce false alarms, improve signal-to-noise ratio,ย and ensure rapid,ย accurateย response to critical infrastructure events to actionable events by the Facility Operations team.ย 
  • Special projects assigned byย Manager.ย 

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate willย possessย the following:ย 

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering,ย  Systemsย Engineering, orย equivalent practical experience.ย 
  • 5 years of experience in data center or critical facilityย environment, focused on theย commissioning of mechanical systems and industrial controls.ย 
  • 5 years of experience with Building Management Systems, PLC programming, SCADAย Architecture (e.g., Modbus, BACnet, industrial networking).ย 
  • Experience managing projects in a Design/Build delivery environment for mission-critical facilities, with a focus on cooling and mechanical automation.ย 
  • Experience with contractors and site safety teams to ensure commissioning activities align with construction schedules and safety protocols.
  • Ability to work in an environment that operates 24/7 and participate in on-call rotation
  • Excellent communication skills.ย 
  • Travel expected up to ~40%.ย
