Controls Engineer Project Manager information

What is a controls engineer project manager?

A Controls Engineer Project Manager is a professional who oversees the design, implementation, and management of automation and control systems within projects. They combine technical expertise in controls engineering—such as programming PLCs, designing control panels, and integrating industrial systems—with project management skills like budgeting, scheduling, and team coordination. Their role ensures that automation projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget, while meeting all technical and quality standards. They often act as the main point of contact between clients, engineers, and other stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controls engineer project manager?

To thrive as a Controls Engineer Project Manager, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, automation systems, and project management, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and PMP certification. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, AutoCAD, and project management software such as MS Project is commonly required. Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help drive teams, manage stakeholders, and ensure project delivery. These skills and qualifications are vital for overseeing complex automation projects, maintaining technical standards, and achieving project goals on time and within budget.

How does a controls engineer project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during project execution?

A Controls Engineer Project Manager frequently works alongside electrical engineers, software developers, mechanical engineers, and project stakeholders to ensure that control systems meet project requirements and deadlines. Collaboration often involves organizing regular meetings, facilitating clear communication of technical specifications, and addressing integration challenges between different system components. Strong teamwork and leadership skills are essential, as the Project Manager must coordinate tasks, resolve conflicts, and ensure all team members are aligned toward project goals. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and helps maintain project timelines and quality standards.

What is the difference between Controls Engineer Project Manager vs Controls Engineer?

Job description

Ehvert Mission Critical, a business unit of Salas O'Brien, is looking for an experienced Controls Engineer based in Canada to join our team and work on the design and delivery of hyperscale and AI data centre projects.

This is a great opportunity for a Controls Engineer with a strong BAS/BMS or industrial controls background who wants to work on complex data centre projects and collaborate with an international engineering team supporting some of the world's largest technology companies.
Role Summary:

As a Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, development, and coordination of Building Automation and Control Systems (BAS/BMS) for hyperscale and AI data centre projects. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will develop control system designs, sequences of operation, points lists, control schematics, and technical documentation while ensuring compliance with project requirements and applicable Canadian and international standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS) and DDC control systems for mission-critical facilities.
  • Develop control philosophies, sequences of operation, points lists, and network architecture.
  • Prepare and review control system drawings, wiring diagrams, control schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Coordinate controls engineering with mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and commissioning teams.
  • Support the integration of HVAC systems, electrical monitoring, and other building systems.
  • Review contractor submittals, RFIs, and technical documentation.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Ensure designs comply with project standards, Canadian codes, and applicable industry best practices.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews and contribute to continuous quality improvement.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Building Automation Systems (BAS), Building Management Systems (BMS), or industrial/process controls engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of DDC control systems and HVAC control strategies.
  • Experience developing control sequences, points databases, and system architecture.
  • Familiarity with major BAS platforms such as Siemens, Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, Delta Controls, or Tridium Niagara.
  • Working knowledge of communication protocols including BACnet, Modbus, and Ethernet/IP.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering projects.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration in Canada is considered an asset.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Why Join Us?

  • Work on high-profile hyperscale and AI data centre projects in one of the fastest-growing industries.
  • Collaborate with industry-leading engineers and global technology clients including Microsoft, Oracle, Uber, and Amazon.
