Job description

Job Summary
We are seeking a BAS Controls Engineer for a contract opportunity in Sioux Falls, SD. This role is ideal for an experienced HVAC controls professional who enjoys a balanced mix of hands-on field troubleshooting and office-based engineering work.
The BAS Controls Engineer will support large commercial building automation projects involving central chiller plants, hot water systems, VAV boxes, and other centralized HVAC infrastructure. This opportunity offers strong technical variety, daily problem-solving, and visibility across both field execution and system design.
You will work in a collaborative project environment with supportive leadership, engaged field teams, and the opportunity to contribute directly to project success. Key Responsibilities
- Perform hands-on troubleshooting and diagnostics for commercial HVAC controls, central chiller plants, hot water systems, and VAV systems.
- Use voltmeters and multimeters to identify faulty hardware, wiring issues, short circuits, open circuits, and system errors.
- Design, engineer, and support Building Automation System solutions for large commercial facilities.
- Manage technical documentation, engineering follow-up, design adjustments, and field-driven project updates.
- Coordinate daily onsite activities with subcontractors, assign tasks, monitor progress, and support project milestones.
- Provide technical updates and progress reporting to general contractors and internal project stakeholders.
Compensation and Benefits
- Pay range: $40 to $45 per hour.
- Job type: Contract/Temporary.
- Location: Sioux Falls, SD.
- Work environment: Approximately 50 percent field troubleshooting and 50 percent office-based engineering.
- Travel: Regular local travel to customer sites is required.

- 3 or more years of dedicated HVAC Controls and Building Automation Systems engineering experience.
- Proven experience with large commercial buildings and centralized HVAC systems.
- Expert-level ability to use multimeters and electrical meters to diagnose faulty hardware, wiring issues, and electrical problems.
- Strong understanding of HVAC controls, control sequences, field devices, and system integration.
- Ability to work effectively in both active construction sites and office engineering environments.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to provide updates to subcontractors, general contractors, and project teams.
- Ability to manage multiple technical priorities while maintaining accuracy and responsiveness.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with Johnson Controls Metasys.
- Strong knowledge of BACnet IP and standard TCP/IP network architectures.
- Ability to modify sequences of operations or write system logic.
- Associate degree, technical diploma, or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
- Extensive industry experience may substitute for formal education.
