Job description

Controls Engineer – Industrial Automation

Baltimore, Maryland | $70,000–$140,000

Take Your Controls Career Beyond Programming

If you're a Controls Engineer who wants to own projects, solve real manufacturing problems, work with advanced automation technology, and build a path toward technical or engineering leadership, this is an opportunity worth exploring.

We're representing a highly respected, engineer-owned automation and controls firm that helps some of America's leading manufacturing operations improve productivity, reliability, efficiency, and performance.

This isn't a role where you'll spend your career making minor PLC changes or working on one small piece of a project.

You'll have the opportunity to work across the entire automation project lifecycle — from understanding the customer's problem and designing the solution through programming, implementation, testing, startup, and successful commissioning.

And as you grow, so can your career.

Engineers here have advanced into technical leadership, project management, sales engineering, engineering management, and senior leadership.

What Makes This Opportunity Different?Own Projects From Beginning to End

You'll be trusted with meaningful responsibility.

You'll work with customers and internal engineering teams to develop automation solutions, execute projects, solve problems, and ultimately see the systems you've designed operating in real manufacturing environments.

Work With Serious Automation Technology

Depending on the project, you'll work with technologies including:

  • PLCs

  • HMI

  • SCADA

  • DCS

  • MES

  • Process control systems

  • Industrial automation networks

  • Manufacturing control systems

You'll have the opportunity to expand your technical capabilities rather than getting locked into one technology or platform.

Solve Real Manufacturing Problems

Projects support sophisticated manufacturing environments across industries such as:

  • Pharmaceutical

  • Chemical

  • Industrial gases

  • Discrete manufacturing

  • Process manufacturing

  • Advanced industrial operations

You'll work directly with customers to understand their challenges and engineer solutions that make an immediate impact.

Join a Company Run by Engineers

Here's something you don't see every day:

The company is owned and managed by engineers who came through the organization as process control system engineers themselves.

They understand the work.

They understand the technology.

And they understand what engineers need to continue developing their careers.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Controls Engineer, you'll join project teams responsible for delivering complete industrial automation solutions.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, developing, and documenting control systems

  • Programming and configuring PLC, HMI, SCADA, DCS, and/or MES applications

  • Developing automation solutions around customer requirements

  • Taking projects through the complete engineering lifecycle

  • Working directly with customers to develop technical solutions

  • Testing and validating control systems

  • Traveling to customer facilities for implementation, startup, and commissioning

  • Troubleshooting controls and automation issues

  • Coordinating with project managers and technical subject-matter experts

  • Helping lead projects and ensure successful delivery

  • Mentoring engineers on controls concepts and project methodologies

What We're Looking For

We're interested in Controls Engineers who combine strong technical ability with the desire to take ownership of projects.

Ideally, you'll bring:

  • 3+ years of industrial controls or automation experience

  • Experience with PLC, HMI, SCADA, DCS, and/or MES systems

  • Understanding of process controls or manufacturing operations

  • Experience delivering controls or automation projects

  • Ability to manage responsibilities throughout the project lifecycle

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to customers and internal teams

  • Willingness to travel to customer sites when projects require it

  • A collaborative, professional approach to engineering

A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related technical discipline is preferred.

PE, EIT, and industry technology certifications are a plus.

Where Can This Position Take You?

This is one of the biggest attractions of the opportunity.

You don't have to remain a Controls Engineer forever unless that's the career path you want.

Strong performers can pursue opportunities in:

Technical Leadership → Project Management → Sales Engineering → Engineering Management → Senior Leadership

The company actively develops and promotes engineers from within.

Compensation & Benefits

Base Salary: $70,000–$140,000

Compensation will depend on your experience, technical capabilities, and qualifications.

The company also offers a comprehensive benefits package including:

  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance

  • 401(k) with employer match

  • Paid vacation

  • Paid sick time

  • Company holidays

  • FSA or HSA options with employer contribution depending on medical plan

  • Professional development opportunities

  • Career advancement and internal promotion opportunities

Build More Than Control Systems. Build Your Career.

If you're good at controls but feel like you've reached the point where you want bigger projects, more ownership, broader technology exposure, and a genuine path toward leadership, this could be an excellent next move.

You'll join engineers solving complex automation challenges for real manufacturing operations — while working for an organization where engineers aren't simply employees.

They're the people running the company.
