Summary
The Millwright apprentice is an entry level tradesman who assists with installs, dismantles, repairs, reassembles and moving industrial machinery and mechanical equipment for the sawmill. This individual will be building their knowledge of equipment capabilities, as well as an understanding of blueprints and technical instructions, to update the equipment for the sawmill through assisting a millwright or millwright lead. This individual will learn leadership skills to carefully take apart, categorize and move old equipment, analyze plans for new equipment, map out space and unpack and assemble new equipment.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Read blueprints, diagrams and schematic drawings to determine work procedures as guided by a millwright.
  • Install, align, take apart and move stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment according to layout plans using hand and power tools as guided by a millwright.
  • Operate hoisting and lifting devices, such as cranes, jacks and tractors, to position machinery and parts during the installation, set-up and repair of machinery as guided by a millwright.
  • Inspect and examine machinery and equipment to detect and find irregularities and malfunctions as guided by a millwright.
  • Adjust machinery and repair or replace defective parts as guided by a millwright.
  • Install, troubleshoot and maintain power transmission, vacuum, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and programmable logic controls as guided by a millwright.
  • Operate machine tools, such as lathes and grinders, to fabricate parts required during overhaul, maintenance or set-up of machinery as guided by a millwright.
  • Constructs foundation for machines, using hand tools and building materials, such as wood cement, and steel as guided by a millwright.
  • Assemble machinery and equipment prior to installation by using hand and power tools and welding equipment as guided by a millwright.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the workplace for preventive maintenance purposes and report findings to lead millwright on shift.
  • Clean, lubricate and perform other routine maintenance work on machinery. Ensure the proper care for machinery, equipment, fittings, and bearings on a regular basis to maintain machinery and equipment is in good operating condition as guided by a millwright.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education / Experience / Certification
  • 1 or more years of experience in the Millwright/Industrial Mechanic trade.
  • 1 or more years of welding experience.
  • 1 or more years of fabrication experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Ability to read blueprints and technical specifications.
    • Ability to weld and fabricate steel.
    • Strong mathematical and mechanical aptitude.
    • Ability to relate and positively interact with team members.
    • Ability to identify root cause of problems and effectively initiate immediate corrective action to prevent reoccurence.
    • Ability to think critically and take proper action.
    • Detail oriented and work accuracy focus.
    • Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy.
    • Use logical step-by-step procedures in work

Physical Demands & Work Environment
The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical sawmill environment. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Noise level is moderate to high depending on the area of the mill. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Requires close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds
