Job description

Raymond West is looking for a sharp Application Engineer to join our Systems teams! The Application Engineer is a professional technical position, responsible for end‑user concepting, technical planning, software/controls know‑how, testing, field support, installation, and post‑installation support throughout the life of the automated equipment we provide. The tasks can be varied and limitless and include the software and electrical controls to support interfaces with our customer’s warehouse management software while directing the operation of automatic storage & retrieval systems (AS/RS), automatic guided vehicles (AGV’s) and Powered Industrial Vehicles (PIT).

Typical work tasks can include advising automation applications, arranging renewal of software licenses, installing software and automation equipment at customer sites. Additional duties include training of end‑users, and working with our sales specialists on applications, specifications, demonstrations, and general sales support. This role will learn a great deal about warehouse automation and quickly gain expertise in the field of logistics.

This position requires technical ability, good problem‑solving skills, and excellent communication to our suppliers as well as internal and external customers. Prior knowledge of materials handling automation including how the software interfaces to this equipment is preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work with Vendors and RW Sales to help develop estimates when needed.
  • Technical software sales support for Raymond West Systems Account Specialists. Includes the following: customer visits and customer integration application specifications, designing the route and rules required for Auto Guided Vehicle (AGV), ASRS, Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT) supporting setup of the Regional Sales Managers/Specialists' laptops and providing training on how to do customer demonstrations. Help Regional Managers in the generation of Product Order Forms and Software Requirements Documents.
  • Installation/implementation and training of end‑user Power Pick Global, Supervisor software, and the Raymond iWarehouse Suite. Includes scheduling, training agendas based on customer’s needs and requirements, train the trainer concepts, operator training, and software configurations.
  • Maintain and implement customer software support renewals. Includes generating software support renewal quotes, receipt of customer purchase orders, creating partner (i.e. Kardex) purchase orders and tracking the Power Pick Global population within Raymond West’s dealer territories.
  • Understanding and knowledge of various controls architectures, related controls levels, and the functionality of controls domains, inclusive of WMS and WCS integration.
  • Develop storage and automation design concepts based on customer operational requirements and data.
  • Substantial and extensive experience with planning, management, and execution of complex material handling systems.
  • Understanding of the dynamic handling characteristics, constraints and risks associated with the wide range of materials handled within a complex material handling system.
  • Knowledge of the constraints and methods for defining and demonstrating equipment, subsystem, and system performance criteria.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the responsibilities and impact of project execution when interfacing with General Contractors, Construction Managers or owners.
  • Knowledge and ability to identify and develop the proper team skills required for the successful implementation of the various products and subsystems employed in complex systems inclusive of mechanical, controls, software, and installation.
  • Ability to develop detailed project schedules inclusive of all in‑scope engineering, installation, and integration schedule activities as well as explicit and implicate out‑of‑scope milestones by others (i.e. owners and general contractors) impacting project execution, using MS Project.
  • Ability to develop, define, and execute acceptance test plans inclusive of physical, function, rate and availability testing.
  • Experience with and execution of general processes associated with change control, approvals, and information exchange involving several stakeholders, both internal and external, in particular with a large number of subcontractors.
  • Ability to coordinate the execution of activities by internal resources as well as contractor resources and recognize early and proactively issues that require corrective action and impact on timely execution.
  • Ability to cause team and organizational action to mitigate scope, schedule, and cost concerns both internally and with customers.
  • Experience with the coordination of on‑site activities involving many (sub) contractors vying for the same space and time windows. Interface with local code requirements including, seismic, fire, and ADA.
Required Skills / Abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational time management skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and similar software.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Networks (Firewalls, anti‑virus products, local administration, etc.). Working knowledge of material handling concepts, inventory control methods, and general knowledge of ERP / WMS systems. A working knowledge or the ability to learn these products or skills very quickly would be necessary:
    • Windows Basic System and Network Administration
    • Microsoft SQL Server
    • SQL Server Studio Manager
    • Oracle
    • SQL Scripts
    • Microsoft Access, Excel, Word.
    • TeamViewer, Go to Assist, Webex, and other remote support products.
    • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.
  • Must be able to maintain effective working relationships with sales team, employees, co‑workers, and managers in other departments.
  • Must be willing to work off‑hours as specific needs dictate and willing to assume more responsibility as required.
  • Be able to demonstrate proficiency with AutoCAD, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project.
  • Be able to perform systems design & layout to include conveyor systems, AS/RS, shuttle systems, and other various packaging equipment.
  • Possess experience in sales, support engineering, and contract preparation/administration.
  • Be able to scale and completely take off of existing facilities as requested by Management.
  • Be able to perform duties under minimal supervision but respond to rapidly varying requirements.
  • Demonstrate drive and initiative, maintain records of activities.
  • Be willing to comply with Employee Handbook.
  • Be willing to continually learn new products and policies.
  • Be able to manage time effectively and maintain an acceptable attendance record.
  • Be willing and able to learn quickly and perform accurately and neatly with a degree of flexibility.
  • Be able to perform independently, and as part of a team with Sales Representatives, suppliers, installers, and clients.
  • Be able to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no more than allowable number of points on record.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Education / Experience

Minimum Education and Experience: Determined by position.

  • Engineering background with over 5 years’ experience in application, design, and installation of mechanical systems or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Travel Requirement
  • 50-60% (20-30 hours a week)
  • Must be able to be insured by Raymond West.
Physical Requirements
  • Position is sedentary and desk bound.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Pay Range
  • The salary range for this position is $70,000 – $90,000. The specific pay offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location.
