What does a Controller do?

A Controller is a senior-level finance professional responsible for overseeing an organization's accounting operations. Their duties typically include managing financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and compliance with regulations. Controllers also supervise the accounting department, prepare financial statements, and work closely with executive management to guide financial strategy. Their work ensures accurate financial records and supports sound business decisions.

What Is a Controller Job Description?

A controller is high-level accounting position in a firm or company. They often report directly to the CFO (Chief Financial Officer) and are responsible for budgets, audits, and financial reports, as well as ensuring the company complies with all tax codes and regulations.

What are some common challenges Controllers face when managing financial reporting and compliance?

Controllers often encounter challenges in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reports, particularly when juggling complex transactions or multiple entities. Staying current with evolving accounting standards and regulatory requirements can also be demanding, as it requires continual learning and adaptation. Additionally, Controllers must coordinate closely with cross-functional teams, such as auditors and department heads, to address discrepancies and streamline processes, making strong communication and problem-solving skills essential.

What is the difference between Controller vs Bookkeeper?

AspectControllerBookkeeper
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA or CMA certifications are commonUsually requires a high school diploma or associate degree; certifications are less common
Work EnvironmentWorks in corporate finance departments, overseeing accounting teamsWorks in small businesses or accounting firms, handling day-to-day transaction recording
ResponsibilitiesFinancial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and strategic financial planningRecording financial transactions, maintaining ledgers, and reconciling accounts

The Controller and Bookkeeper roles differ mainly in scope and seniority. Controllers oversee financial strategies and reporting, requiring advanced credentials and experience. Bookkeepers focus on recording daily transactions and maintaining accurate records. While both are essential for financial management, Controllers have broader responsibilities and higher qualifications, often managing teams and ensuring compliance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controller, you need a strong background in accounting principles, financial analysis, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA certification. Proficiency with ERP systems, advanced Excel, and financial reporting software is essential for managing complex financial data. Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top Controllers apart. These skills and qualities ensure accurate financial oversight, compliance, and strategic decision-making for organizational success.

Assistant Controller

Clozd

Lehi, UT

Full-time

Posted 19 days ago

Job description

Clozd is the leader in Decision Intelligence, helping companies uncover the truth by capturing direct feedback throughout the customer journey.

We believe most revenue organizations are operating without the full picture. CRM and call data only tell part of the story. Clozd delivers the missing truth layer, giving executives the insights they need to improve win rates, retention, and growth.

We need team members who can tackle ambiguity, solve complex problems, and delight customers. We hire dynamic employees who take initiative, find ways to simplify and scale, possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, value humility and learning, crave a fast-paced startup environment, and never compromise their integrity.

As the accounting owner at Clozd, you will lead our accounting function and have the opportunity to build it at the leading edge — a modern, AI-augmented operation where automation and agents handle the work that doesn't require accounting judgment, freeing you to focus on the work that does. You will partner closely with the Controller to design financial processes and deploy automation where it's ready. We've already started down this path with a custom-built close checklist replacing our previous close tool, and we're looking for someone excited to push further. You will own the balance sheet, lead Clozd's monthly close, and serve as the primary point of contact for our annual audit.

This is the senior-most accounting role at Clozd outside of the Controller, with a clear path to Controller as the company grows.

What you will be doing:
  • Close ownership: Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close. Own timeliness, accuracy, and continuous improvement of the close calendar.

  • Balance sheet ownership: Own the balance sheet end-to-end — reconciliations, review, and accuracy across cash, receivables, payables, fixed assets, accruals, deferred revenue, deferred commissions, and capitalized software.

  • Audit leadership: Serve as the primary point of contact for our external auditors. Manage documentation, prepare technical accounting memos, and drive the audit to a clean, on-time finish.

  • Revenue and compliance: Maintain GAAP revenue recognition under ASC 606. Own sales tax filings, nexus analysis, and debt covenant compliance reporting.

  • AP, AR, and payroll oversight: Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll operations. Initially hands-on; over time, transition execution to automation and agents under your direction.

  • Automation and systems design: Evaluate, deploy, and maintain the tooling stack that powers the accounting function — including NetSuite, Ramp, and emerging AI agent tools. Build the roadmap for what gets automated and what stays with you.

  • FP&A partnership: Support the FP&A team with accurate actuals, GAAP revenue forecasting inputs, and cash flow forecasting.

  • Cross-functional collaboration: Partner with Operations, R&D, and Revenue teams to ensure data accuracy supporting revenue recognition, commissions, and reporting.

Join Clozd and help define what a modern accounting function looks like. If you are an accounting professional who is energized by building rather than maintaining, we want to hear from you.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance

  • 3+ years of accounting experience, including experience owning or substantially leading a monthly close

  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP, with the ability to research and document technical positions

  • Demonstrated experience automating or restructuring an accounting process

  • Proficiency with NetSuite

Preferred Qualifications:
  • CPA certification

  • ASC 606 / SaaS revenue recognition experience

  • Audit experience, ideally as a primary point of contact

  • Experience with deferred commissions and capitalized software

  • Multi-state payroll and sales tax nexus experience

  • Familiarity with finance automation tooling (Ramp, Bill.com) and AI/agent-based workflows

  • Experience at a SaaS company

Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation (i.e. salary, bonus, 401k, and equity)
  • Majority of medical, dental, disability, life, and other insurance paid
  • Unlimited PTO with a boss that encourages taking time off and using PTO to recharge
  • 10 paid holidays and company shutdown between Christmas and New Years
  • Weekly catered lunches, stocked kitchens, quarterly company/department activities, maternity/paternity leave, EAP program, etc.
