A controller is high-level accounting position in a firm or company. They often report directly to the CFO (Chief Financial Officer) and are responsible for budgets, audits, and financial reports, as well as ensuring the company complies with all tax codes and regulations.

What are some common challenges controllers face when managing financial reporting and compliance?

Controllers often encounter challenges in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reports, particularly when juggling complex transactions or multiple entities. Staying current with evolving accounting standards and regulatory requirements can also be demanding, as it requires continual learning and adaptation. Additionally, Controllers must coordinate closely with cross-functional teams, such as auditors and department heads, to address discrepancies and streamline processes, making strong communication and problem-solving skills essential.

To thrive as a Controller, you need a strong background in accounting principles, financial analysis, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA certification. Proficiency with ERP systems, advanced Excel, and financial reporting software is essential for managing complex financial data. Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top Controllers apart. These skills and qualities ensure accurate financial oversight, compliance, and strategic decision-making for organizational success.

Job description

About Nanit:
Nanit is moving families beyond overwhelm by transforming how parents understand their baby's early years. We combine advanced AI, real-world data from billions of sleep hours, and clinical expertise to deliver the clarity and confidence every parent deserves. Trusted by over one million families and backed by $125M in funding, we're building an entirely new category: predictive parenting intelligence.
Here, your work directly impacts millions of families. Our team of scientists, engineers, and parents is small but mighty - we share a mission to make early childhood easier, healthier, and more connected. If you want to work on technology that genuinely matters, join us.
About the Role:
We are seeking a Controller to own Nanit's accounting operations and financial reporting. This is a critical role for a company operating at the intersection of physical hardware and recurring subscription revenue - with the complexity that entails: inventory accounting, cost of goods, deferred revenue, and the reporting rigor required of a business that has achieved significant scale and continues to grow.
The ideal candidate is a technically strong accounting leader who has built and managed accounting functions at companies with both meaningful scale of physical inventory and subscription or SaaS revenue streams. This person thrives on building process, driving accuracy, and serving as the operational backbone of the finance organization.
What You''ll Do:
  • Own all accounting operations including the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process - driving accuracy, timeliness, and continuous improvement in close cycle efficiency
  • Maintain and enforce accounting policies including revenue recognition, inventory valuation, cost of goods sold, deferred revenue, and subscription revenue treatment
  • Manage and develop the accounting team; build capacity and structure to support continued growth
  • Own the external audit relationship - serve as primary point of contact, manage deliverables, and ensure clean, timely audit completion
  • Partner with FP&A to ensure the integrity of actuals feeding into financial models, variance analysis, and board reporting
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, and cash management controls
  • Build and maintain a strong internal controls environment; identify gaps and implement scalable process improvements as the business grows
  • Support tax compliance in partnership with external advisors - federal, state, sales tax (including nexus management for a multi-channel retailer), and international as applicable
  • Lead systems and tools strategy for the accounting function, including ERP optimization and integration with adjacent platforms (3PL, subscription billing, e-commerce)

Who You Are:
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3-5 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role
  • Mandatory: prior experience at a company with significant physical inventory (consumer hardware, CPG, or similar) - you understand standard costing, inventory reserves, and COGS complexity
  • Mandatory: prior experience at a company with subscription or recurring revenue - you are fluent in deferred revenue and hybrid hardware/software revenue arrangements
  • Experience at a company that has scaled - you've built accounting infrastructure to match growth, not just maintained it
  • Deep technical GAAP knowledge with particular strength in revenue recognition, inventory, and cost accounting
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and develop a team; a builder who can hire, train, and scale an accounting function
  • Experience managing external audits at a company with meaningful operational complexity
  • Strong systems fluency - NetSuite required; familiarity with 3PL integrations, Shopify or DTC platforms, and subscription billing systems a strong plus
  • CPA required; Big Four or national firm public accounting audit background preferred
  • Highly organized, process-oriented, and comfortable operating with significant ownership in a lean, fast-paced environme

EEO, Salary and Location:
This is a hybrid role that will require prospective candidates to be in our NYC office 3 days per week.
Salary Range: $240,000 to $260,000 + plus equity and benefits. The base pay is one component of Nanit's total compensation package, which may also include access to healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan, short-term and long-term disability coverage, and basic life insurance. Ultimately, in determining your pay, we'll consider your location, experience, and other job-related factors.
We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We provide employment opportunities without regard to age, race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, disability, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other protected class.
