To thrive as a Controller, you need a strong background in accounting principles, financial analysis, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA certification. Job description

Atomic Coffee Roasters is seeking a technology-forward Controller to own our accounting function and deliver financials that leadership can trust every day. We have invested heavily in modern accounting systems, including AI-assisted workflows built in-house, so this role centers on the work that requires an accountant's judgment rather than repetitive tasks. This role reports to the COO and offers a path for growth as the company scales.

About Us

Atomic Coffee Roasters is a family-owned specialty coffee roaster and cold brew manufacturer on Boston's North Shore, with our roastery in Peabody and our cold brewery and headquarters in Danvers. We roast for cafes, restaurants, and across New England and coffee fans across the country. We are a lean, modern, growing operation that uses technology for the everyday tasks, freeing our people to keep improving our craft and taking care of our customers.

Responsibilities

  • Own day-to-day accounting in QuickBooks Online, including daily bank and credit card reconciliation
  • Own the monthly close end to end: journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, inventory and COGS adjustments, and prepaid schedules
  • Manage AP and AR, including invoice processing, payment runs, cash application, and collections follow-up
  • Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies with customers and vendors (misapplied payments, billing errors, short pays) and handle the related correspondence
  • Operate and review the output of our automated accounting workflows, verifying results against source documents; full training provided
  • Serve as the day-to-day contact for our outside CPA firm and prepare the year-end package
  • Support payroll processing and related journal entries
  • Identify and drive process improvements across the function

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of a monthly close
  • Strong command of full-cycle accounting: GL, reconciliations, AP/AR, journal entry preparation from source data, and financial statement preparation
  • QuickBooks Online fluency and strong Excel skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and a habit of double-checking work, including output from software and systems
  • Strong written communication skills for customer, vendor, and CPA correspondence
  • Technology-savvy and highly coachable: you adopt new tools willingly, learn quickly, and keep building on what you're taught. Enthusiasm for working with new technology is something we actively seek. If working alongside AI tools doesn't appeal to you, this probably isn't the right fit
  • Self-directed: able to take ownership of the function and manage priorities independently
  • Manufacturing or inventory accounting experience a plus
  • Multi-entity or intercompany accounting experience a plus
  • CPA a plus, not required

Compensation and Benefits

  • $100,000 - $120,000 depending on experience
  • Eligible for an annual bonus
  • Company benefits package
  • Full-time, hybrid: primarily on-site in Danvers during the initial training period, with flexibility to work from home two to three days per week thereafter
