What is a controller manager?

A Controller Manager is a senior-level professional responsible for overseeing the accounting operations of an organization, including the production of financial reports, maintenance of accounting records, and implementation of controls to mitigate risk. They ensure compliance with financial regulations and internal policies, and may also be involved in budgeting, forecasting, and supporting audits. Controller Managers typically supervise a team of accountants and work closely with upper management to provide financial insights and support strategic decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controller manager?

To thrive as a Controller Manager, you need a robust background in accounting, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance, usually supported by a CPA or relevant accounting degree. How does a controller manager typically balance strategic oversight with day-to-day financial operations?

A Controller Manager is responsible for ensuring both the accuracy of daily financial transactions and the alignment of financial practices with the organization’s strategic goals. This often involves managing a team that handles routine accounting tasks while also participating in high-level planning, budgeting, and financial analysis. Regular collaboration with executive leadership is common, especially when setting financial targets or evaluating business performance. The role requires strong organizational skills and the ability to shift between hands-on problem-solving and big-picture financial management.

Job description

Description:

We’re looking for a hands-on, detail-obsessed Controller to lead accounting operations across three high-growth, high-energy brands: Legacy Franchise Concepts (LFC), SWTHZ (Sweathouz), and Dogtopia. This role owns the integrity of our financial operations from general ledger to audits. You’ll ensure the books are clean, bills are paid, reimbursements run smoothly, and processes scale as we grow. This is not a sit-back-and-review kind of Controller role. It’s roll-up-your-sleeves leadership that blends precision, process improvement, and cross-functional partnership.

Requirements:

What You’ll Do

Accounting Operations
  • Oversee the general ledger and ensure timely, accurate month-end close across multiple entities
  • Ensure proper account coding, classifications, and reconciliations
  • Maintain financial records in compliance with GAAP
Accounts Payable
  • Lead the AP function, ensuring timely and accurate invoice processing and vendor payments
  • Strengthen and maintain vendor relationships
  • Oversee workflows, approvals, and policy compliance across brands
Accounts Receivable
  • Supervise invoicing, collections, and reconciliations
  • Monitor aging reports and escalate overdue accounts as needed
  • Implement process improvements to accelerate collection cycles
Employee Expense Management
  • Oversee employee reimbursements, ensuring timely payouts and policy adherence
  • Provide tools and guidance to managers and team members
  • Improve expense submission and approval workflow
Team Leadership
  • Directly manage a team of three (3)
  • Coach, develop, and support performance and cross-functional collaboration
  • Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and documentation
Audit & Compliance
  • Lead preparation for annual financial audits
  • Ensure compliance with financial reporting requirements and internal control
  • Oversee timely filing of tax and regulatory reports
Process Optimization & Systems
  • Evaluate and refine accounting processes for scalability and efficiency
  • Manage accounting systems and tools to support team success
What You Bring

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required
  • CPA or Master’s in Accounting preferred
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • 3+ years in a Controller or equivalent leadership role
  • Experience managing multi-entity accounting operations strongly preferred

Skills & Competencies

  • Deep knowledge of GAAP and audit readiness
  • Proven leadership across AP, AR, and expense management functions
  • Expertise in accounting platforms (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite) and advanced Excel skills
  • Systems thinker with a continuous improvement mindset
  • Clear communicator who builds trust across departments
  • Calm, decisive leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment
