Summary / Objective

The Cooley Transportation and Logistics Division Controller is responsible for supporting the Senior Controller and CFO in overseeing the company's accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, internal controls, and compliance activities. This role serves as a key member of the finance team, helping ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial information while supporting strategic decision-making across a diversified group of construction and related businesses.

The position works closely with leadership to improve financial processes, strengthen controls, provide operational insights, and support the company's continued growth.


Job Duties / Essential Functions

Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations

  • Assist in overseeing daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and cash management
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes
  • Prepare and review financial statements, account reconciliations, and management reports
  • Maintain compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records and reporting

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring internal controls and financial procedures
  • Support compliance with financial, tax, insurance, and regulatory requirements
  • Coordinate external audits and provide audit support documentation
  • Maintain accounting policies and process documentation
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen financial controls and reduce organizational risk

Budgeting & Financial Planning

  • Support annual budgeting and forecasting activities
  • Monitor financial performance and analyze budget-to-actual results
  • Assist with cash flow forecasting and financial planning initiatives
  • Provide financial analysis and performance reporting to leadership

Strategic Financial Support

  • Partner with the Controller and executive leadership on special projects and strategic initiatives
  • Assist with financial modeling, operational analysis, and business planning
  • Provide timely financial information to support decision-making
  • Serve as the Controller's backup and delegate when needed

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • CPA designation strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, audits, and month-end close processes
  • Experience with ERP systems, financial reporting tools, and advanced Microsoft Excel
  • Construction, logistics, or project-based industry experience preferred
