Job description

The Pueblo of Laguna Department of Education is seeking an experienced and collaborative Controller to ensure the effective and efficient financial management of LDoE operations. Reporting to the Executive Director of Finance & Accounting, the Controller manages the day-to-day functions of the finance and accounting department.

The Controller plays a critical role in safeguarding LDoE assets and ensuring compliance with tribal, federal, and state regulations, while overseeing accounting, financial reporting, and accounts payable functions.

This position is onsite in Laguna, New Mexico. Commuter support will be provided for candidates residing in Albuquerque or Grants.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee LDoE's day-to-day accounting operations
  • Support the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, as well as the annual audit
  • Work with the EDF to maintain systems that ensure high-quality services for children and families in compliance with department, tribal, federal, and state standards
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analyses
  • Maintain and reconcile financial data in accordance with GAAP and GASB standards
  • Review accounting transactions and documents for accuracy; approve and coordinate reports prepared by accounting staff
  • Prepare and negotiate LDoE's annual Indirect Cost Proposal (or manage outsourced preparation)
  • Serve as lead liaison on assigned grants and contracts between the finance department, other departments, and funding agencies
  • Assist in preparing LDoE's annual budget and processing budget revisions
  • Support departments with accounting and fiscal document preparation
  • Design and develop financial reports, trial balances, and statements using financial reporting and spreadsheet software
  • Oversee accounting software administration and daily operational duties
  • Maintain effective working relationships with staff, parents, and the community

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, GASB, internal controls, financial reporting, and audit processes
  • Experience with government fund accounting, tribal grants/contracts management, and/or school accounting preferred
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills preferred
  • Experience with School ERP (Infinite Visions) software preferred
