Controller / Accountant

A.P. O'Horo Company
Location: Youngstown, OH
Salary: $90,000 – $120,000 per year (commensurate with experience)
Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Role

A.P. O'Horo Company is seeking an experienced Controller / Accountant to oversee accounting operations and provide accurate, dependable financial information to support company leadership and strategic decision-making.

This position plays a critical role in managing the company’s financial processes, including general ledger accounting, financial reporting, job cost accounting, tax compliance, audits, payroll, benefits administration, and internal controls. The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting professional with strong construction accounting experience, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple areas of the Finance Department.

Responsibilities

• Perform General Ledger accounting, journal entries, accruals, adjustments, and account reconciliations

• Lead the month-end and year-end closing processes

• Prepare financial statements, audit schedules, and supporting workpapers for six-month and year-end financial reviews and audits

• Perform Federal, State, and Local tax filings and manage periodic tax payments and returns

• Prepare quarterly fuel and use tax returns

• Supervise Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, and all accounting functions within the Finance Department

• Maintain fixed asset records and intercompany accounting entries

• Perform job cost accounting, job budgets, and financial analysis for construction projects

• Support internal and external audits, including audits involving unions and tax agencies

• Maintain company vehicle registrations and CDL driver files

• Administer company 401(k) and health benefit plans

• Manage workers’ compensation accounts and reporting

• Prepare monthly union reports and required documentation

• Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with accounting policies and regulations

• Provide insightful financial reporting and recommendations to senior management to support business decisions

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required

• Minimum of 5 years of related accounting and finance experience

• Strong experience with General Ledger structures, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting

• Experience managing financial closing processes

• Experience with job cost accounting and construction financial reporting

• Strong knowledge of internal controls, audit readiness, and regulatory compliance

• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and strong computer proficiency

• Experience with accounting software required

• Foundation Software experience is a plus

• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Construction industry accounting experience strongly preferred

• Experience with union reporting and compliance

• Experience with tax filings and regulatory reporting

• CPA or additional accounting certifications are a plus
