Assistant Controller – Gabrielli Truck Sales

Position Summary
Gabrielli Truck Sales, a leading family-owned commercial truck dealership group with multiple locations across the Northeast, is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to support the Controller in managing the financial operations of our growing organization. This role will be integral to maintaining the accuracy, integrity, and efficiency of all accounting and reporting processes. The Assistant Controller will ensure compliance with dealership-specific tax and regulatory requirements, support operational leaders with financial insights, and contribute to process and system improvements across the accounting department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for all Gabrielli Truck Sales entities.
  • Support the Controller in day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger management, accounts payable/receivable, bank reconciliations, and payroll processing.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, including but not limited to:
    • Sales tax filings and audits
    • Federal Excise Tax (FET) reporting and compliance
    • Local business and property taxes
    • Dealership and manufacturer-specific reporting requirements
  • Coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors to support annual audits and tax preparation.
  • Maintain and enhance internal controls and accounting procedures to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant financial reporting.
  • Assist in the budgeting and forecasting process, preparing variance analyses to support operational decision-making.
  • Provide financial insights and reporting to dealership and department managers, helping to drive profitability and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in system upgrades, automation initiatives, and process improvements across all Gabrielli dealership locations.
  • Train, mentor, and support accounting staff, promoting a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a key contributor on special projects and initiatives led by the Controller and executive management team.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or progress toward CPA strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within an automotive or truck dealership, retail, or multi-entity organization.
  • Solid understanding of dealership accounting operations, including tax compliance (sales tax, FET, and multi-state filings).
  • Experience with dealership management systems (DMS) such as CDK, Reynolds & Reynolds, or Karmak preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, accounting software, and financial reporting tools.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • A proactive and hands-on approach to problem-solving and process improvement.
