Job description

We are looking for an experienced Controller to oversee the full accounting and finance function for a client located in Oakland County, Michigan. This position combines strategic financial leadership with active involvement in daily operations, supporting executive decision-making while ensuring strong financial controls and accurate reporting. The role will guide a small finance team and play an important part in budgeting, forecasting, cash oversight, lending support, and real estate-related financial activities.


Responsibilities:

• Lead day-to-day accounting and finance activities while supervising a three-person finance team and promoting accuracy, accountability, and efficiency.

• Prepare and review monthly and periodic financial statements, close activities, and management reports to support informed business decisions.

• Develop the annual budget and produce ongoing forecasts that reflect operating performance, project activity, and business goals.

• Oversee cash flow planning, banking activity, and reconciliations to help maintain liquidity and support operational needs.

• Manage payroll and accounts payable processes to ensure employees and vendors are paid correctly and on schedule.

• Coordinate tax filings, support tax planning efforts, and work with external auditors and advisors to meet compliance requirements.

• Maintain relationships with banking partners and assemble financial materials needed for loan requests and other financing discussions.

• Partner with executive leadership on debt and equity funding initiatives, providing financial analysis and documentation as needed.

• Support real estate transactions by overseeing financial documentation related to closings, insurance matters, and development activity.

• Monitor key project and pricing information, including work-in-progress and related reporting used to track residential housing performance.

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related discipline with a strong foundation in financial and operational accounting.
• At least 7 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including leadership responsibility.
• Demonstrated background in financial reporting, month-end close, budgeting, forecasting, and cash management.
• Advanced Excel skills with the ability to analyze data, build models, and prepare clear financial reports.
• Experience preparing financial statements, completing bank reconciliations, and supporting tax compliance activities.
• Ability to operate in a hands-on role while also contributing strategic financial insight to senior leadership.
• Prior public accounting experience is highly valued.
• Experience in residential homebuilding, construction, or property management environments is strongly preferred.
