Job description

Controller - Accounting Services

We're building an accounting services group for a plumbing, HVAC, electrical, drain, and septic contractor. We're hiring our first Controller.
What you'd own

  • The monthly close, start to finish - a documented checklist in software we build in-house
  • Reconciling the general ledger to the ServiceTitan subledger every month, down to an explained variance
  • Balance-sheet integrity across multiple entities and business units (trades) - no unreconciled accounts, no plugs
  • Correcting prior-period errors properly: documented entries, root cause, controls so it doesn't recur
  • Loan principal/interest splitting, fixed assets, depreciation
  • The monthly reporting package, including a written explanation of what moved and why
  • Reviewing our bookkeeper's work - you're the review layer, not the data-entry layer
  • Writing it all down well enough that someone else could run it

What we're looking for

  • You've owned a monthly close by yourself. Not assisted with one - owned it.
  • You've cleaned up books someone else broke, and you can walk us through how you found the problem
  • You've had a subledger and a GL disagree by a number that mattered, and you tracked it down
  • You document as you go, because you've been on the other side of someone who didn't
  • You're comfortable in software - you pull your own reports, learn new systems without a training department, and would rather report a bug than build a workaround
  • You can sit across from a business owner and tell him something he doesn't want to hear, pleasantly
  • Multi-entity experience
  • ServiceTitan or similar field-service software is a real plus
  • Trades, construction or home services background is a real plus
  • CPA is welcome and not required

What we're not looking for

  • Big-ERP specialists. Different job, different instincts.
  • Anyone comfortable posting a plug and truing it up later.

Benefits

  • $90,000–$120,000 base, depending on experience
  • Target annual bonus, tied to a written scorecard - not opinion
  • Health benefits, PTO
  • Possible equity conversation for the right person.
  • Direct access to the founders. No layers.

Schedule
Monday to Friday
8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Why this is worth a conversation

Most controller jobs are one company, forever, and the ceiling is visible on day one. This is a company we're building. Near term you clean up and run the books of a real business heading toward a real transaction - where clean books aren't housekeeping, they're the whole valuation. Longer term, the process you build is how we onboard everyone after this, and you lead that team.
If you want to be the finance function rather than a part of one, this is that job.
Apply with a résumé. No cover letter needed - but if you want to stand out, tell us in three sentences about the worst set of books you ever inherited and what you did about it.
