Job description

SkillsetGroup is seeking a Controller - Construction Industry to work in the city of Phoenix, AZ area. The ideal candidate will lead accounting and financial operations for a high-performing construction division. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for financial reporting, compliance, budgeting, and overseeing the full accounting function while partnering closely with operations and executive leadership. Job: Controller - Construction Industry
DIRECT HIRE OPPORTUNITY!!!
Rate: $130-150k/yr.
Shift: 1st shift, M-F flexible start time 7am, 8am and OT as needed
Key Responsibilities & Qualifications
  • 8+ years of accounting experience, with construction accounting strongly preferred, and prior supervisory or management experience required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred
  • Oversee 5 employees: 2 AP's, 2 AR's, 1 Staff Accountant
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and job costing principles
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting
  • Oversee all accounting functions including AP, AR, payroll entries, job costing, and account reconciliations
  • Manage budgets, forecasts, and financial analysis to support operational performance and decision-making
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, audits, and construction-specific reporting requirements
  • Supervise and develop accounting staff while maintaining strong internal controls
  • Review and manage WIP reporting, revenue recognition, and cost allocation across multiple projects
  • Support contract review, billing disputes, collections, and insurance/bonding processes
  • Partner with leadership to identify financial risks, analyze variances, and drive process improvements
  • Oversee compliance programs including certified payroll, 401(k), and regulatory filings
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with accounting systems (Sage or similar preferred)
  • Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills with the ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment
