Job description

OR Assistant
Schedule: Full Time Day shift - 36 hours (7am-7:30pm) Rotating Weekends and holidays required
Position Summary
Under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Perioperative Orderly supports direct and indirect patient care activities within Perioperative and Heart & Vascular Services. This role works closely with the entire surgical team-including nurses, physicians, surgeons, technicians, and other hospital staff-to ensure efficient workflow, patient safety, and a clean, well-stocked surgical environment.
Responsibilities include assisting with operating room turnover, equipment cleaning and inspection, supply stocking, patient transport and positioning, and other support duties as assigned. The Orderly is also authorized to retrieve blood products from Transfusion Medicine Services as directed by a Registered Nurse or Coordinator. This position has no supervisory responsibilities and reports directly to the Manager or a designated member of the Perioperative leadership team.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with operating room turnover and setup to support department throughput
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and aseptic environment in compliance with infection control standards
  • Perform daily inspection and cleaning of equipment in assigned areas
  • Prepare operating rooms according to scheduled procedures
  • Remove, label, and report malfunctioning equipment to leadership
  • Follow all body substance precautions and wear appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times
  • Assist with patient transport to PACU and other nursing units as needed
  • Assist with patient positioning in operating rooms
  • Support Heart & Vascular team members with pre-operative patient clipping and prepping
  • Stock and maintain supply PAR levels; communicate supply needs daily
  • Restock and monitor blanket warmers throughout the day
  • Answer phones and assist nursing staff as needed
  • Participate in required education, orientation, and annual competencies

  • 3-6 months of related experience

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Successful completion of the department orientation program
  • Good hand-eye coordination and mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to maintain focus and perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress surgical environment
  • Intact or corrected vision and hearing
