Control Engineer Intern information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Control Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Control Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of control systems theory, programming basics (such as MATLAB or Python), and coursework in electrical or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with PLCs, SCADA systems, and simulation software is common, and some internships may look for coursework certifications or lab experience. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate on projects and troubleshoot system issues. These qualifications are essential for contributing to complex automation projects and ensuring reliable, efficient system performance.

What is the difference between Control Engineer Intern vs Control Engineer?

AspectControl Engineer InternControl Engineer
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed a degree in electrical, mechanical, or control engineeringBachelor's or master's degree in engineering, with relevant certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in manufacturing, automation, or industrial facilitiesFull-time professional role in similar environments with increased responsibilities
ResponsibilitiesAssisting with control system design, testing, and troubleshooting under supervisionDesigning, implementing, and maintaining control systems independently or as part of a team

The main difference between a Control Engineer Intern and a Control Engineer is experience level and responsibility. Interns are in learning roles, assisting with tasks under supervision, while Control Engineers are fully responsible for designing and managing control systems in professional settings.

What does a Control Engineer Intern do?

A Control Engineer Intern assists in designing, implementing, and testing control systems that help machines and processes operate efficiently and safely. They typically work under the supervision of experienced control engineers, supporting tasks such as programming PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), developing automation solutions, and troubleshooting control equipment. Interns may also help with data analysis, documentation, and collaboration with other engineering teams to optimize system performance. This role provides hands-on experience in industrial automation and control engineering.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Control Engineer Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Control Engineer Intern, you can expect to assist in designing, testing, and troubleshooting control systems for automated equipment or processes. Interns commonly contribute to project tasks such as PLC programming, developing and simulating control algorithms, and supporting system integration under the guidance of senior engineers. You'll likely work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers, gaining exposure to real-world industrial automation challenges. This hands-on experience is valuable for building technical skills and understanding how control systems are implemented in practice.

The Senior Survey Technician performs quality control on survey documentation, mentors junior staff, and helps ensure compliance with applicable regulations and company procedures.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Process and adjust survey field data; perform computations and analysis to generate accurate surfaces, alignments, and coordinate geometry as required.
  • Perform QA/QC on calculations, linework, and survey deliverables; troubleshoot discrepancies and coordinate corrections with field and CAD staff.
  • Help establish and maintain office production standards, templates, and QA/QC checklists; identify opportunities to improve efficiency and consistency.
  • Lead internal reviews of survey deliverables prior to submission; coordinate markups, revisions, and final document readiness with the project team.
  • Coordinate with project managers and survey crews to confirm scope, required deliverables, schedules, and data needs; communicate processing questions and constraints early.
  • Prepare, review, and support production of survey drawings, plats, exhibits, and reports to meet project requirements and applicable standards.
  • Maintain organized project files and survey records (control, metadata, notes, and processing logs) to support traceability and efficient review.
  • Support project planning by estimating office processing effort, identifying software/equipment needs, and recommending efficient workflows and standards.

Basic Requirements:
  • Associate's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in surveying, with expertise in field and office surveying tasks.
  • Proficiency with common survey data processing and CAD platforms used to produce survey deliverables (e.g., Leica Infinity and AutoCAD Civil 3D, or comparable software).
  • Valid driver's license; occasional site visits or field support may be required based on project needs.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of relevant Surveying training; active Survey credentials in DE (e.g.: completing PS and/or FS exams to qualify for PLS or Surveying Intern certification) is preferred.
  • Management and/or Project Management experience is preferred.
  • Proven expertise with modern Survey methods, best practices, and technologies.
  • Proficiency with relevant technologies / tools (e.g.: CADD, Total Stations, HDLS, GIS, etc.); experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, RTS (Robotic Total Stations), GPS, and Leica Geosystems HW & SW is preferred (additional exposure to MicroStation, Bentley OpenRoads, and/or Faro High-Definition Laser Scanning equipment is a plus!).
  • Proficiency on all standard Microsoft Office software applications, especially with MS-Excel.
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Proven ability to work in a self-motivated manner while effectively multi-tasking and prioritizing multiple assignments.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal & written).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Extensive knowledge of surveying principles and methods; strong working knowledge of CAD and survey production workflows.
  • Familiarity with applicable regulations, industry standards, and safety guidelines related to surveying.
  • Knowledge of best practices in survey data processing, documentation, file management, and quality control.
  • Advanced proficiency with survey data processing software and coordinate geometry (such as Leica Infinity and comparable platforms) and CAD-based drafting/annotation workflows (such as AutoCAD Civil 3D and comparable tools).
  • Working knowledge of Leica survey equipment and data workflows (e.g., total stations/GNSS, controllers, downloads, file formats) sufficient to support processing, troubleshooting, and coordination with field staff.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify root causes and resolve discrepancies.
  • Proficiency using CAD to review, mark up, and support production of survey drawings.
  • Strong organization and time-management skills to prioritize work and meet deadlines across multiple projects.
